CineMuse Hi-Def Cinema Documentaries Join the Lineup at the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium
Rochester, NY - Bright, clear, high-definition documentary cinema joins the lineup of entertaining and informative programming at the Rochester Museum & Science Center Strasenburgh Planetarium beginning October 7.
The planetarium is joining the CineMuse Network, a unique group of museums and other cultural attractions presenting documentaries from the world's leading producers. (Visit http://www.cinemuse.com for more information about CineMuse.)
A blended array of three new high-definition digital projectors has been added to the Planetarium Star Theater to project CineMuse programs. Viewers will see the new high-definition images in a wide rectangular area comfortably placed in front of the seats on the Star Theater dome.
"CineMuse programs are not just projected in high-definition, they are produced in HD as well. So the heightened picture quality is built in from the beginning of the production," says Planetarium Director Steve Fentress. "With the new Star Theater projectors, the image looks brilliant and sharp, and makes a wonderful complement to the immersive, dome-filling image we already present with giant-screen film."
At the Strasenburgh Planetarium, CineMuse documentaries will be paired with giant-screen films, which fill nearly the entire dome, to make two different hour-long family-oriented show packages:
Beginning October 7, the CineMuse program "The Song of Africa" will be paired with the giant-screen film "Wild Ocean." Combined show length: 65 min.
Beginning October 10, the CineMuse program "The Octopus Challenge" will be paired with the giant-screen film "Beavers," already a favorite with family audiences. Combined show length: 60 min.
Both combination programs will continue through March 2010, along with the planetarium's menu of star and laser shows.
For the convenience of audiences attending the new, longer programs, the planetarium schedule will change so that shows begin at 90-minute intervals. "These new show packages will provide added value for our visitors," Fentress says.
The complete planetarium show schedule, including CineMuse, film, star and laser shows, is available at www.rmsc.org or in the RMSC's News & Programs publication, which is mailed to RMSC members and distributed at the RMSC museum and planetarium box offices.

"The Song of Africa" (CineMuse Feature)
"The Song of Africa" is a visual and musical celebration of Africa captured by photographer Tadayuki Naito. Taking great care not to disturb the natural movements of the animals, Naito recorded images and sounds of the people and wildlife of Kenya. Using special editing techniques and a soundtrack by percussionist Hiromiki Okano, "The Song of Africa" expresses the timeless rhythms of life on the savannah.

"Wild Ocean" (Giant-screen Film)
"Wild Ocean" is an action-packed, inspirational giant-screen film exploring the interplay between man and our endangered ocean ecosystem. Filmed off the coast of South Africa and set to the rhythm of the local people, "Wild Ocean" highlights one of nature's greatest migration spectacles, plunging viewers into an underwater feeding frenzy, an epic struggle for survival where whales, sharks, dolphins, seals, gannets and billions of fish collide with the most voracious sea predator, mankind. "Wild Ocean" is a production of Giant Screen Films and Yes/No Productions, written and directed by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, the same team who produced the award-winning film "Pulse: a STOMP Odyssey."
Beginning Saturday, October 10, 2009: "The Octopus Challenge" plus "Beavers"
Length: 60 min. For all ages.
Admission: adults $10, seniors and college students $9, ages 3-18 $8. RMSC members free.

"The Octopus Challenge" (CineMuse Feature)
The octopus is a truly remarkable creature. This amusing and insightful program shows the octopus in action--squeezing into tiny spaces, sniffing out hidden food, even opening doors. These soft-bodied, boneless mollusks appear to outshine all the other invertebrates, but are they clever or just instinctive?
A BBC/Animal Planet co-production.
"Beavers " (Giant-screen Film)
Filmed on location in the Canadian Rockies, this giant-screen film follows a family of beavers as they grow, play and transform the world around them. Leaving an overcrowded colony, a pair of beavers begins the task of felling trees and building a new dam and lodge. Having grown up in the presence of film cameras, this particular beaver family acts naturally as the all-seeing giant-screen lens peers into their lodge, allowing viewers to share the joy and excitement as new, young beaver kits learn to swim and begin to discover their world.
