Solar Panels to Spark Science Excitement at the Rochester Museum & Science Center
ROCHESTER, NY — With generous support from O'Connell Electric and funding from the New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA), the museum rooftop at the Rochester Museum & Science Center is now the site of a 5,920-watt photovoltaic system installed by Rochester Solar Technologies, O'Connell's solar division. The new solar panels provide power to meet some of the RMSC's needs, and a handy opportunity to engage visitors in exploring the science behind this alternative energy source.
In early 2010 the RMSC will create an interactive exhibit where visitors can monitor current weather conditions and the museum's solar panel performance. The exhibit will include a sample panel, along with information about how the technology works. Victor Salerno, chair of the RMSC Board of Trustees and CEO of O'Connell Electric, is particularly excited about reaching visiting school groups. "Offering a hands-on opportunity to explore a cutting-edge topic like alternative energy is a great way to inspire kids with enthusiasm for science. It's what the RMSC is all about," says Salerno.
