A day of hands-on experiments with local scientists and RMSC educators!
Join us at the RMSC for a day of science exploration. Travel through the museum as you meet local scientists, enjoy museum exhibits and gain a better understanding of science concepts. Participate in exciting hands-on
experiments such as:
Studying DNA: Use a Lysis buffer to extract DNA from bananas. Relates to students understanding of cells, their make-up, and genetics. (Process Skills, Magnitude and Scale, Models, Living Environment Performance Indicators 1.1, and 2.1)
Projectile Motion: Launch corks over sixty feet with methanol cannons. Adjust the angle of the cannon to maximize the distance. (Process Skills Scientific Inquiry, Magnitude and Scale, Patterns of Change; Physical Setting Performance Indicators 4.1, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2; Math Strands Measurement, and Communication)
Chemical Reactions: Observe chemical reactions, create experiments, make predictions and test hypotheses during this engaging, inquiry-based lab that includes physical and chemical changes, acid/base indicators, and reaction types. (Process Skills Scientific Inquiry, Magnitude and Scale, Patterns of Change; Physical Setting 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.2)
Polymers: Hands-on experiments with different polymers that have varying chemical and physical properties. Explore and contrast the difference between a cross-linked and non cross-linked polymer, nylon, styrofoam, plyacrylate, and others. (Process Skills Scientific Inquiry, Engineering Design, Patterns of Change; Living Environment Performance Indicator 7.1; Physical Setting Performance Indicator 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.2)
Meet local scientists and community groups to explore additional hands-on stations throughout the museum. Confirmed groups include:
Water Education Collaborative Get close-up with the macro-invertebrate organisms living in our water.
New groups will be added to this list as confirmed.
