With experienced educators, a museum filled with hundreds of interactive exhibits to explore, and new camp topics at every age level Curiosity Camps 2018, has more to offer than ever before. Important Camp Information

  • Prior to registering, please review our Camp Information & Policies for all of the additional information you’ll need to know before your campers first day!
  • To register call 585.697.1942 or explore Camps by Age below to register online. Registration is required prior to the start of camp.
  • Campers are grouped based on the age of the child at the time of the camp.
  • You may not register other people's children. If your camper plans to attend the same camp with a friend please indicate that upon registration so we can group them accordingly.
  • Early registration is recommended! Enrollment is limited and we do not have a waiting list.
  • Check-In takes place in the Eisenhart Auditorium lobby, not the main museum building.
  • "Almost" and "Full Day" Campers must bring their own lunch.
  • Extended Care is available.

Mini Camps are a great opportunity for children to prepare for preschool and for hands-on learning in a social setting.

Full Day campers enjoy their summer days spent on the RMSC campus with hands-on experiments, engaging activities, fun experiences and field-trip excursions depending on the camp choice!  Lunch is not provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch.

Water, water everywhere! Our whole world is water: It's what we drink, where we play, and where many of our animal friends live. Explore water in all its forms, learn about the sea and its inhabitants, and learn how important (and fun!) water is for you.

Can You Build It? — Week 2 (SOLD OUT)

Week 2 (July 2–6, excluding July 4)

Can you build it?  How high can you build it?  Can you make a tower taller than you are?  Can you knock it down when you’re done?  How can you make it harder to destroy?  Using simple tools of the trade and lots of different building blocks we will answer all of these questions (and more!) in a week dedicated to pint-sized engineering.

Feathered Friends — Week 3

Week 3 (July 9–13)

This one's for the birds! Down on the Farm — Week 6

Week 6 (July 30–Aug. 3)

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O; and on that farm there was a cow, a horse, a goat, a rooster, a gaggle of chickens, and a flock of sheep. Learn about all the animals that call the farm home. How Things Move — Week 5

Buggin' Out — Week 1

Week 1 (June 25–29)

Did you know there are more insect species on the planet than any of the other species? This calls for an investigation into their itty bitty world. Inspect insects as you learn all about flying flies, bumbling bumblebees, creepy crawly ants, and even itsy, bitsy spiders. Go on a bug safari, make some teeny tiny friends, and create your own insect to take home and spook your family. It’s enough to drive you buggy!

Dino Daze — Week 2

It’s not so much where to find these beasts, but when! Travel back in time to the Jurassic Era and discover dinosaurs. Fast forward a few hundred million years to the last Ice Age and meet mega-sized mammals like mastodons, smilodons, giant beavers and a super-sized sloth! From gentle giants and wooly wonders, plant eaters and meat-eaters, to T-Rex and Triceratops… how do we know they were here? …Give me the news; I’ve got a bad case of loving camp. Examine what makes the human body tick in this hands-on discovery camp. Hearts, lungs, bones, and brains—explore the organs and body systems that keep us going. Practice your bedside manner as you learn to administer basic first aid. Head to the operating room to dissect* a sheep’s heart and eyes. From the hair on your head to the tips of your toes, find out how amazing the human body really is!

Use the Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics system to build your own robot. Working as a team, you will build and learn to control a sophisticated robot. Week 4 (July 16–20)

Discover the many sides of engineering in this exciting new program. Become a civil engineer to construct buildings and bridges as part of a model city. Have a hair-raising good time discovering electrical engineering and the science of electricity. Create your own gadget that actually works, examine the inner workings of household machines, and complete an RMSC Inventor Center Challenge as you investigate the field of mechanical engineering. Toss in a little environmental engineering and some simple computer engineering and you’ll be well on your way to engineering your world.

Get serious and study the solemn field of Fun-ology. Try not to have fun as you learn the science behind your favorite fun activities. It’s everything animals from aardvark to zebra! The animal kingdom consists of over 2 million known species (so far!) and are some of weirdest and wildest inhabitants of our world. Museum Discoveries: The Story of Us — Week 8

Spycraft — Week 2

Being a spy isn’t all glamourous parties and death defying stunts like in the movies. Most of it relies on a highly sophisticated set of skills known as spycraft. Turn everyday objects into a hiding place for a stolen microchip. Assume a false identity and make an information drop. Learn how to code your messages and break coded messages that you intercept. Visit Q branch to make your own spy gadgets. But most importantly, do all of that (and more) with our getting caught.

Embrace the Force and examine the science behind the Star Wars story. Use the epic movie franchise as a guide to discover physics. Learn about rocket propulsion, real-life forces, space travel, and more. Make a lightsaber, build a droid, and enjoy a special presentation in Electricity Theater. This camp with be the best Jedi training anywhere outside of the Dagobah System.

Note: This two-day camp experience will be the same on Monday and Tuesday as it is for Thursday and Friday and should not be combined to create a 4-day program.

High tech meets low tech in this new camp that connects the virtual and actual worlds of building. Build a virtual world in Minecraft, get logged in and discover CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and explore how architects, engineers, artists and others use this software to create technically precise plans, blueprints and drawings. Switch gears and log-out to bring your virtual worlds to life with hands-on building. Explore the design process as you build, learn, share, experiment and repeat. Bit by bit and block by block, we’ll put the tech in architect.

If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s making a mess! Get ready for our messiest, most outrageous camp yet. Forget about a handful of slime; walk in (or on?) an entire vat of oobleck. Geology Rocks! — Weeks 5

You know what rocks? Rocks rock. And so do fossils, minerals, dinosaurs, and geological phenomena. Dig down into the world of geology as you investigate the destructive power of volcanoes and earthquakes, discover the rich geological deposits in our area, investigate continental drift, and learn all about dinosaurs and prehistoric beasts. Tour RMSC’s extensive rock and fossil collection and dig for your own fossils on a field trip to the Penn Dixie Paleontological Education Center in Blasdell, NY.

What do gorillas, rhinos, and leopards have in common? These and other endangered species could all go the way of the dodo if we’re not careful! Find out about extinct animals, big and small, majestic and wacky. Learn why they went away and how we can keep more species from joining their ranks. Full Tilt Physics — Week 1

Hold on tight for this week of physics and fun at full tilt! At top speed and with maximum energy and force, increase your “funderstanding” of physics! Defy gravity, build flying machines, power projectiles, and measure g-forces. Feel the forces of friction, inertia and momentum as you investigate Newton’s Laws with hands-on experiments. See (and hear!) physics in action during an Electricity Theater show and explore energy and light. Construct circuits with Makey Makeys, incorporate interactive LED components into wearable technologies, learn the language of programming with Scratch, create using a 3D printer, and more! Animal Ambasadors — Week 3 (SOLD OUT)

Become an animal ambassador! A champion for critters! A representative for reptiles! A supporter of all species! Develop a deeper appreciation for animals through unique interactions and up-close observations of real life animals. Discover animal diversity and adaptations as you compare and contrast physical anatomy. See how small changes in your daily actions can help reduce human impact on their natural ecosystems. Meet an array of animals and working professionals in animal related careers to learn behavior and training tips, proper animal care techniques, and how you can be the next great generation of animal ambassadors.

Camp includes a special experience with the Wildlife Rockstars, exclusive access to meet and help care for the animals that reside in RMSC’s Carlson inquiry Room, featured presenters, and an off-campus field trip to a local animal education center.

Contraption Reaction— Week 3

Week 3 (July 9–13)

Experiment with materials, tools, levers, pulleys, and gears to create a contraption that’s all about reactions. Collaborate, create and build fantastic contraptions in the fashion of Rube Goldberg. Work together to overcome design challenges and share engineering solutions as you apply the not-so simple mechanics of simple machines. Put Newton’s Third Law of Motion to the test as you discover the effects of gravity, angles, velocity and friction first hand as you design and build your very own chain reaction machine.

Science Fiction Faction — Week 4

Week 4 (July 16–20)

Join the faction, escape the real world and immerse yourself in the genre of science fiction. Where else can you go to find a world of infinite possibilities harnessed only by your imagination? Where everyday people with superpowers are a thing? Where the heroes always win? Uncover the fun of fantasy, design your own “escape room,” and experiment to discover the real science principles behind some of the best ideas in science fiction. Take your camp experience to the next level and explore the ways cutting edge science is happening in and around our community! This week you’ll have an all access pass to the labs at local universities where you’ll get an up-close and hands-on look into real-world science. Interact with scientists from the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and St. John Fisher College to see real-life applications of science. Discover the world of seismic activity beneath your feet in the University of Rochester’s volcanology lab; learn about sustainability efforts in our community; get a hands-on introduction to the world of virtual reality; and come behind the scenes to discover the next level of science in RMSC’s current exhibits and those that are in the works!

Art in Society — Week 6

Week 6 (July 30–Aug. 3)

Art adds beauty to our world and entertainment to our lives, but what role can it play in bettering our society? How can art be used as activism, to help connect us to our past, or to help save the planet? Welcome to the world of Art-tivism. From graffiti to murals, see how public art broadens our understanding of the world and impacts our community. Go on a walking tour of public art in the city of Rochester. Use that inspiration as you create your own work of art, painting a decorative rain barrel. After displaying your work at RMSC, take the rain barrel home and use it to inspire your community to help preserve our planet.

Travel to infinity and beyond using the one-of-a-kind resources of the Strasenburgh Planetarium for an in-depth study of everything between earth and the farthest reaches of the universe. Examine galaxies, constellations, stars and planets. Are there other planets just like earth out there—are we alone? Discover other habitable worlds, exoplanets, and how many other civilizations may exist. Investigate black holes, gravitational waves, and the distortions of space and time. Learn about the Cassini Space Probe’s mission to Saturn and see how technology from our community is impacting the study of space. Make your own spectroscope, model an asteroid, and so much more.

EV3 Robotics Innovators — Week 9 (SOLD OUT)

Take EV3 Robotics to another level. Challenge yourself to build a robotic elephant, puppy, monster, crane, or other advanced robot. But building is only half the challenge! Program your robot to complete complex tasks. Display your work in one of our museum galleries at our EV3 Expo.

Extended Care Options

Extended care is available Monday through Friday for Almost Camps (AM only) and Full Day Camps and is NOT available for Mini Camps. Registration for Extended Care is required. Pre-registration upon registering for the camp week is encouraged. 

Before Care

Supervised, unstructured playtime monitored by Curiosity Camp staff. 

After Care

4:15-5:30pm $25/week

Structured, exploration time in smaller group settings--choose the elective that’s right for your camper! Choose between:

  • Movie Buffs: Enjoy your favorite feature films up on our big screen. All movies shown are age appropriate and rated either G or PG.
  • KEVA Club: Take your tower-building skills to the next level as you construct wooden towers and structures with the ever popular KEVA Planks.
  • Board Gamers: Challenge your friends to a classic board game—chess, Battleship, Clue, Candy Land, Monopoly, Sorry!, Life, Connect Four and more!

You will be charged a late fee of $5 per minute for campers that have not been picked up by 5:30pm.


Camp Scholarship

The Eva Howe Stevens Scholarship at the Rochester Museum & Science Center provides limited financial assistance to young people in need who are residents of Monroe County and can benefit from offerings at the RMSC. Applicants must be residents of Monroe County and meet financial guidelines for consideration.
