About the Instructor

Patrick Smith owns and operates the West Hollow Boat Company in Naples, New York. He started the company in 1991 after taking several boat building courses. His interest in wooden boats goes back to his youth with summers spent in canvas canoes and small boats in the Finger lakes and Ontario, Canada.

Pat pursues his passion using methods and hand tools largely developed in the 1800s. He both restores old boats to their former glory and builds new craft, including several of his own design.

After Pat set up his boat building shop, he started teaching boat building and restoration courses along with paddle making. In 1998, he was integral in setting up the Adirondack Boat Building School at the Historic Great Camp Sagamore in Raquette Lake, New York.
