Community Celebrates New Technology Donation from German Optics Institute to Rochester Museum & Science Center

ROCHESTER, NY—A joyous crowd consisting of several German and local dignitaries as well as other supporters of the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) gathered to celebrate the official donation of advanced new holographic technology from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF to the RMSC. A press conference presentation and reveal of the Holographic Laser Projector technology took place at 10am on Monday, May 15 in the Museum’s Illumination: The World of Light and Optics exhibition in the Harry Germanow Gallery.

Many notable local and international figures and supporters were present at the event. Attendees included Minister President of the Free State of Thuringia Bodo Ramelow, Director of Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann, RMSC President Kate Bennett, RMSC Chief Science Officer Daniel J. Menelly, Consul for Political Affairs, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Mario Sauder, members from the Thuringian Parliament, RMSC board members as well as several others.

“Light can help solve pressing problems of our society such as health, energy, and security,” said Prof. Andreas Tünnermann, director, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF. “Our exhibit harnesses nanoscale light control, showcasing an energy-efficient, next-generation display solution. It is an honour for us to present this technology at the Illumination: The World of Light and Optics exhibition at RMSC.”

“We are grateful for the technological prowess and generosity of those at the Fraunhofer IOF and we are always keen to strengthen our partnerships, this time by expanding them internationally,” said Daniel J. Menelly, Chief Science Officer, RMSC. “We are excited for our visitors to have the opportunity to engage with this advanced technology to understand its future impact on our lives and become inspired.”

The new Holographic Laser Projector technology is a highly efficient micro-projector that uses multi-colored computer-controlled lasers to generate holograms. Based on a nano-structured technology, this installation has the ability to make holograms “appear” when incoming rays of light are manipulated in a defined space. Studying and measuring the way light rays interact with surfaces, including surfaces with extremely small and intricate patterns, is an important process with potential impacts on data storage and medical visualizations. This process enables more exact engineering of new technologies. Guests to the Illumination: The World of Light and Optics exhibition will be able to view striking optical effects with an early form of this new technology.

The new technology will be available for guests to explore in the Illumination: The World of Light and Optics exhibition this summer.
