Cunningham House Studio

Cunningham House Studio

Once the home of artist Kathleen McEnery Cunningham, the Regency-style Cunningham House houses RMSC administrative offices. The artist's elegant former studio is available to host up to 40 guests for your event. The studio is perfect for seminars, small receptions, showers and rehearsal dinners.

Cunningham House History

Ownership of the Cunningham House property can be traced to John Culver in 1815. From that point, the property passed through several owners and was purchased in 1872 by Benjamin E. Chase. A Victorian-style house was constructed around 1880. In 1916, Francis E. Cunningham purchased the property from the Chase estate and deeded the house to his wife, Kathleen.

The Cunninghams engaged the Rochester architectural firm of Arnold and Stern to redesign and remodel the house. The Regency-style dwelling that you see today is a result of that redesign by Herbert Stern. They added Kathleen's studio to the north of the original house because she was a professional artist and patron of the arts.

In 1969, Kathleen gifted the house to the RMSC. As part of our long-range plan, the structure was designated to become the administrative hub of our growing complex.

A generous gift from the Frank E. Gannett Newspaper Foundation, Inc. in 1974 made the refurbishment possible, and it was completed in early December 1975.

The only structural changes to the exterior of the house were those mandated by safety and fire regulations. Inside, on the first floor, we made every attempt to retain the architectural integrity of the house, making only minimal structural changes. On the second and third floors, we made some structural alterations to create functional office areas.

Through the generosity of Kathleen Cunningham and the Gannett Foundation, the RMSC has both preserved a historically significant Rochester house while at the same time using it on a day-to-day basis.
