What Is A Changemaker?
Adapted from the works of George Couros, author of “The Innovator’s Mindset” 1 and Dr. Irma McClaurin, author of “Black Feminist Anthropology: Theory, Politics, Praxis, & Poetics.” 2
A Changemaker is someone who has purpose. They are visionaries with the ability to see the impossible as possible.
IS PATIENT YET
A Changemaker stays strong, even in the face of brutal criticism. They understand that they’re in the race for the long haul. Changemakers persist.
Being a Changemaker means stepping on toes, and not backing off when people say “ouch.”
LEADS BY EXAMPLE
Changemakers bring different kinds of knowledge(s) and experience(s) to their work. They talk the talk and walk the walk. They do not ask anyone to do something they would not commit to themselves.
BUILT ON TRUST
Changemakers understand that success of social change is not dependent upon the individual, but is the result of trusted, transparent relationships. This may involve tough decisions to maintain the integrity of their mission.
