Reopening with Your Safety in Mind

Adventures at the RMSC might look a little different, but the exciting experience of discovery and exploration will be the same. As we reopen the Science Museum, Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cumming Nature Center, we ask you to work together with us to keep the RMSC a safe space for yourself, for all visitors, and for our staff.

See below to learn about the changes to the visitor experience.

What we’re doing to keep you safe

  • Limiting visitor capacity.
  • Encouraging visitors to purchase advanced tickets online. Onsite ticket purchases will also be accepted.
    • Please note, RMSC Members do not have to make reservations for their visit in advance, they can simply show their membership card at the Welcome Desk.
  • Implementing social distancing with signage, spacing markers, and route paths.
  • Providing physical barriers such as plexiglass shields in customer service areas.
  • Temporarily closing some hands-on, interactive exhibits. These include:
    • Exhibits on our Mezzanine level, including the ball pit, big blue blocks, and KEVA blocks.
    • The Dig Pit in Expedition Earth.
    • Any climbing structures, including those in our Adventure Zone exhibition.
    • Multi-surface play experiences that use bricks, tiles, dress-up costumes, stuffed animals, or other shared items.
    • Any exhibit that utilizes fans, sand, or non-brominated water.
    • Immersive exhibit experiences that involve confined spaces, such as Harriet Jacobs’ attic and Joseph Bloss’s woodshed exhibits in our Flight to Freedom exhibition.
  • Providing substantial access to hand sanitizer and encouraging hand washing often.
  • Increasing cleaning and disinfecting throughout our facility.
  • Temporarily closing the Cafe´ at the RMSC. Please note that the seating area will be available for those who choose to bring their own food, but tables seating will be limited and spaced 6 feet apart.
  • For more information, see RMSC’s Cleaning and Sanitation Standards below.

What we’re asking our visitors to do

  • Stay home if you are not feeling well.
  • Purchase tickets in advance before you head to the Museum.
  • Wear a mask. This is required for any visitor over the age of 2. If you cannot wear a mask for health reasons, you are required to wear a face shield. If you do not have a mask you can purchase one from the RMSC Welcome Desk for $1.
  • Wash your hands often, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and be sure to cough/sneeze into your elbow.
  • Stay with your party when walking through the Museum, and keep children within reach at all times.
  • Please be patient – don’t crowd around exhibits. Practice social distancing and remain 6 feet away from others not in your party.
  • Follow the directional signage throughout the Museum.

RMSC Cleaning and Sanitation Standards

We have worked diligently to develop new procedures that ensure a safe environment for all who come through our doors. This includes making our rigorous sanitation procedures public, mandatory COVID-19 safety training for all staff members and volunteers, limiting building capacity, and modifications to day-to-day operations and exhibits.

We will continue to rely on guidance from the CDC, New York State Department of Health, and Monroe County Health Department to make operational decisions and adjustments as necessary.

Cleaning & Sanitation Standards

  • RMSC custodial staff is on-site before, during, and after the Museum, Nature Center, and Planetarium operating hours to sanitize and clean the restrooms, cafe´, common areas, and exhibit galleries.
  • Staff are frequently cleaning and disinfecting commonly touched surfaces using electrostatic sprayers to eliminate the spread of germs throughout each day.
  • The Star Theater chairs, railings and other high touch areas will be disinfected after every show.
  • Multiple hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the Museum, Planetarium, and Nature Center.
  • Staff and volunteers are required to frequently wash their hands and to not come to work if they are sick or have a fever.
  • Visitors are encouraged to notify Museum staff if an area or object needs immediate attention.
