Important Camp Information

  • Prior to registering, please review our Camp Information & Policies for all of the additional information you’ll need to know before your campers first day!
  • To register call 585.697.1942 or explore Camps by Age below to register online. Registration is required prior to the start of camp.
  • Campers are grouped based on the age of the child at the time of the camp.
  • You may not register other people's children. If your camper plans to attend the same camp with a friend please indicate that upon registration so we can group them accordingly.
  • Early registration is recommended!  We do NOT have a waiting list and enrollment is limited.
  • Check-in: For camps on the museum campus, check-in takes place in the Eisenhart Auditorium lobby, not the main museum building. 
  • Almost & Full Day Campers must bring their own lunch.
  • Extended Care is available.

Different camp structures are available based on the age of your campers:

Mini Camps

Mini Camps are a great opportunity for our youngest campers to prepare for preschool & for hands-on learning through play in a social setting.

AM SESSION: 9-11:30am or PM SESSION: 1-3:30pm

Almost Camps

For “almost” a full day, Almost Campers enjoy fun and enriching learning activities and museum exploration as they prepare for a full-day program. Lunch is NOT provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch. For some Curiosity Camps that take place at the Cumming Nature Center, transportation is provided and are indicated by the bus icon .

Full Day Camps

Full Day campers spend the whole day exploring the fun & creative ways that science (and a wide variety of other STEM topics) helps us explore the wonders of our world! Lunch is NOT provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch. For some Curiosity Camps that take place at the Cumming Nature Center, transportation is provided and are indicated by the bus icon .

Mini Camps for Ages 2–3 (Parent with Child)

Lil' Paleontologists — Week 1 SOLD OUT

Week 1 (June 24-28)

Discover dinosaurs like never before!  What did they eat? Where did they live?  How big were they really? Can you walk in their giant footsteps?  Did they run, jump, or even fly? Dig for fossils, play dino dress-up, hatch your own dinosaur eggs, and learn about some modern-day animals that resemble dinosaurs.

Planes, Trains, Automobiles  — Week 2 -- SOLD OUT

Week 2 (July 1–3)

What makes airplanes fly up into the sky?  What makes trains move and cars go whizzing by?  Start your engines and investigate the science behind cars, trains, planes, trucks, and more.  Use fun-sized versions of the real things to explore, create, and learn. Discover the physics of flight, locomotion, and gravity.  Fasten your seatbelts… it’s gonna be a wild ride!

*Please note:  This is a 3 day camp session.  There will be no Mini Camps on Thursday, July 4th or Friday July 5th.

Animal Pals — Week 3 -- SOLD OUT

Week 3 (July 8–12)

Some of our animal friends run; others climb, walk, fly, jump, and swim.  Some of them are furry, while others have scales, feathers or quills. Learn about them all.  Find out where they live, what they eat, and what sounds they make. See the many animals in the RMSC's collections, meet the reptiles and amphibians that call the RMSC home, and get a visit from the Wildlife Rockstars.

Shoot for the Moon — Week 4 -- SOLD OUT

Week 4 (July 15–19)

Fly me to the moon; let me play among the stars...  Blast off into space and travel to the moon. Image what it would be like to walk on the moon, collect moon rocks, and hunt for aliens.  But don’t stop there! Journey further into the cosmos and discover our solar system, constellations, galaxies, and more.

Fizzy Foamy Fun— Week 5 -- SOLD OUT

Week 5 (July 22–26)

Welcome to the fizzy, foamy world of kiddy chemistry.  What are some things that fizz and foam? Can you create a chemical reaction to make them do that?  Watch some fizzy science demos; mix your first potions; make fruit fizz and foam; and create fizzy, foamy art.

Construction Crew — Week 6 -- SOLD OUT

Week 6 (July 29–Aug. 2)

Grab your hard hats and join the crew for a week of constructive and destructive fun.  Try your hand at construction and discover how buildings are designed, built, and demolished.  With your very own tool belt and kid versions of our favorite tools, you’ll discover what it takes to be a pint-sized engineer.  Get ready to dig, mix, and build!

Peewee Scientists — Week 7 -- SOLD OUT

Week 7 (Aug. 5–9)

Grab your goggles and lab coats as you play, learn, create, and explore science. Get your hands dirty and learn about oobleck, bubbles, and more.  Discover simple physics, learn about your senses, experiment with magnets and get a hands-on introduction to all things scientific.

Under the Sea — Week 8 -- SOLD OUT

Week 8 (Aug. 12–16)

Ever wish you could swim with the fishes?  Come explore the fascinating world that exists under the sea.   Discover all the amazing animals that live below the surface; from itty bitty fish to giant sea monsters and everything in between.  Experiment with waves, sand, & sea shells; build a boat to visit your new fishy friends; transform yourself into a shark; and find out if it really is better down where it's wetter.

Big Wheels — Week 1

Week 1 (June 24–28)

The 18 wheels on the truck go round and round…  Fire trucks! Dump trucks! Garbage Trucks! Cement Trucks!  How many different trucks can you name? From trucks to trains to tractors, all the coolest machines have great, big wheels.  Find out what makes these monstrous machines go. See how they construct our cities, produce our food, keep us safe, and help us get from place to place.   …so keep on truckin’; it’s gonna be a great week!

Frozen Solid — Week 2

Week 2 (July 1-3)

Do you want to build a snowman...in the summer?  Let’s turn down the temperature for a camp all about snow, ice, and freezing cold temperatures.  Make indoor snow, grow crystal snowflakes, freeze liquid in an instant, and taste some frozen treats along the way.  Find out what survives (and thrives!) in a frozen world blanketed by snow and ice. So bundle up for three days of frigid fun!

ABC Science — Week 3

Week 3 (July 8-12)

A is for astronomy, B is for biology, C is for crazy chemistry, D is for dinosaurs…  There’s a whole alphabet of science for you to explore. Discover physics, experiment with color & light, learn about your senses, and use science to make music.   So brace yourself for a fast paced introduction to all things scientific… from A to Z.

Animal Safari  — Week 4

Week 4 (July 15-19)

Lions, Zebras, Giraffes, oh my! The safari adventure is closer than you think! Hop on in to the driver’s seat and become a safari guide through the savanna grasslands.  Can you count the spots on a cheetah? How tall is a giraffe? Could you out run an elephant? Or zip past a zebra? Learn all about amazing African animals, play animal games, make animal art, and meet some real live animals!

Space Adventure — Week 5

Week 5 (July 2327)

Calling all future astronauts and adventurers!   Put on your spacesuit (don’t have one? Don’t worry, we’ll make one!) and join us for an adventure to the moon, just like the one real astronauts made 50 years ago!  But don’t stop there, tour the whole solar system, journey to the stars, and hunt for aliens. Complete astronaut training camp, experiment with gravity, and visit the exhibits at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Icky, Sticky Science — Week 6

Week 6 (July 29–Aug. 2)

Forget about hands-on science, it's time for hands-IN science!  Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty for a week of icky-sticky, ooey-gooey, slimey-grimey science fun.  Discover the super-slimey states of matter, use household items to make outrageous paintings, and find out how messy (and FUN!) chemistry can be.

Itsy Bitsy Insects — Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 5-9)

The Itsy Bitsy Spider went off to summer camp…  Investigate the itty bitty world of bugs from flying flies to creepy crawly ants.  Go buggy as you learn what makes the insect world so special. What do they eat? Where do they live?   Did you know that Itsy Bitsy and all his spider friends aren’t really insects? Go on a bug hunt, make some teeny tiny friends, and design your own bug to take home and spook your family.

Lil' Engineers — Week 8

Week 8 (Aug. 12-16)

If you can dream it, why not engineer it?  There are so many different types of engineers, but what do they all do?  Some engineers help construct our cities; others help protect our environment, work with electricity, or make machines.  Discover what it takes to become an engineer as you experiment with simple machines, design a bridge, create a tower and more…  Find out which of our animal friends is nature’s engineer and witness a hair-raising electricity demo!

Camps for Ages 4–5

When I Grow Up... — Week 1

Week 1 (June 24-28)

…I want to be a scientist!  An astronaut! A Farmer! A Firefighter!  Those are all scientists? See how people with all sorts of fun jobs use science every day.  Even try your hand at some jobs from the land of make believe as you learn how kings and queens of old built their castles and sail the seven seas with some friendly pirates.

Build It. Break It — Week 2

Week 2 (July 1-3)

If you can build it, you can break it.  Learn about building structures and breaking them down, using simple machines, a whole bunch of different building materials, and some destructive devices like catapults and wrecking balls.  But remember, the bigger you build it, the harder it falls!

Messy Mixtures — Week 3 -- SOLD OUT

Week 3 (July 8-12)

Messy mixtures and righteous reactions are the name of the game!  Roll up your sleeves to make slime, play with foam, mix colors, and make messy art in a week full of crazy chemistry.  You're gonna get messy, so we'll make smocks and get busy stirring up some fun.

Mini Med School — Week 4 -- SOLD OUT

Week 4 (July 15-19)

Enroll today in RMSC Medical School; the only major med school to accept 4 year olds!  Once we look the part, we'll get down to the business of learning all about the human body.  How strong are bones? Why do we blink? What makes us sick and how do we stay healthy? Discover the answers to these questions and more as we explore the human body inside and out.

Our Blue Planet — Week 5

Week 5 (July 22-26)

What a wonderful world we live in!  Explore the deep blue seas and see the majestic creatures that swim beneath the surface.  Venture into the jungle and climb the highest mountains to see what makes those habitats (habitat? what’s that?) so special.  Learn all about weather, rocks, & volcanoes and blast off into space to see our beautiful blue planet from space.

Woodland Critters — Week 6

Week 6 (July 29–Aug. 2)

Calling all eager beavers and social butterflies… If you love all the critters that call the forest home, you’ll be drawn to this camp like a moth to a flame.  Some critters have fur, others have feathers or quills. Some critters crawl along the forest floor, others climb trees, jump from limb to limb, or fly amongst the tree tops.  Learn about all the cute little critters that live in the woods right around Rochester. You’ll even get to meet some super cool critters with the Wildlife Rockstars!

Up, Up & Away— Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 5-9)

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... the best week of camp ever!  Learn about everything that flies, soars, glides, orbits, or floats in the sky above our heads.   We've got it all: from man-made marvels like airplanes, rockets, and hot air balloons, to the natural world of birds, clouds, and falling raindrops.  Get ready to take flight; the only thing keeping your feet on the ground is your own imagination.

Dino Mania — Week 8 -- SOLD OUT

Week 8 (Aug. 12-16)

If you love dinosaurs, then this camp is for you!  You'll be amazed by all the things that make these ginormous creatures so bad to the bone.  Become an explorosaurus when you visit RMSC’s Expedition Earth exhibit to dig for fossils and see a dinosaur skeleton.  Learn about dinosaur defenses, play dino dress-up, and find out how big they really were. Make your own fossils to bring home as a souvenir from your visit to Dino Mania!!!

Almost Camps for Ages 5–7

Pirates of the RrrrrrMSC — Week 2

Week 2 (July 1-3*)

Shiver me timbers!  It’s a whole camp dedicated to the life of a friendly pirate.  Do you know how to navigate the high seas? How do you harness the wind and ride the waves? Can you read a treasure map?  Make your own mini pirate ship to race against your shipmates; build a catapult to fire at hostile vessels; and come face to face with real and imagined sea life.  Yo, ho, ho… It’s a pirate’s life for me!

Space Race— Week 3 -- SOLD OUT

Week 3 (July 8-12)

3… 2… 1…  Blast off!  Let’s race into space and become the first campers to walk on the moon.  Start by graduating from RMSC Astronaut Academy and learning to launch rockets.  Then you’ll be ready to travel to the moon just like Neil Armstrong did 50 years ago.  When you’re done exploring the moon, travel deeper into space… zoom through the solar system and launch yourself into the cosmos to discover stars, constellations, and galaxies.  Take in a show at the Strasenburgh Planetarium to find your place in space, become a space ace, and complete the Space Race.

Ready, Set, Mess! — Week 4

Week 4 (July 15-19)

On your marks... get set... make a mess!  Don't be afraid to get a little dirty as you mix, blend, smush, and smear your way through a week of crazy chemistry, fun-tastic physics, and the exciting field of grossology.   Experiment with science that fizzes and foams; play with your food as you discover kitchen chemistry and edible art; get grossed out by some of the crazy things humans and animals do; and make lots and lots of slime!

Hocus Pocus — Week 5 -- SOLD OUT

Week 5 (July 22-26)

Hocus pocus... it's magic with a scientific focus!  Grab your cape and ready your wand to learn how real science looks like magic.  Use science to make things disappear, create your own optical illusions, mix up some crazy potions, and more.  Step into the world of fantasy to make dragon blood, unicorn poop, and fairy dust. Make a box of tricks to take home and impress your friends.  As a special treat, you’ll get to attend an exclusive magic show with Mario the Maker Magician! **

Digging for Dinos — Week 6 -- SOLD OUT

Week 6 (July 29–Aug. 2)

Go digging for dinosaurs and travel back in time to when the dinosaurs ruled the Earth.    From gentle giants to carnivorous monsters, get to know T-Rex, Triceratops, Velociraptors, and several other famous—and not so famous—prehistoric beasts.  How do we know they were here and where did they go? What did their prehistoric habitat look like? How has the Earth changed in the 66 million years since then?  Go digging for fossils in Exhibition Earth, discover how fossils are made, and become a master geologist and paleontologist.

Wild Things— Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 5-9)

Travel to some of the most remote corners of our planet and discover the wildest and weirdest inhabitants of our world.  From cute and cuddly to big and scary, investigate animals that run, climb, jump, fly, and swim. Discover the difference between mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish.  Learn their characteristics and find out which wild things don’t follow the rules—mammals that fly like birds, birds that swim like fish, and fish that are actually mammals! Walk on the wild side as you take in a special show from the Wildlife Rockstars and meet the animals that call RMSC home.

Science Sleuths— Week 8

Week 8 (Aug. 12-16)

Do you have what it takes to become a Science Sleuth? Grab your magnifying glass, study the clues, and sleuth out the truth in an exciting week of science discovery.  Play detective as you learn to separate fact from fiction—test out the laws of science, discover the science behind some of your favorite fictional stories, and become an expert myth buster.  Live the scientific method and develop your own conclusions to the mysteries all around us.  Think you’ve seen it all? Be amazed in a special Live Science Show from the RMSC Players.

Planet Patrol — Week 9 -- SOLD OUT

Week 9 (Aug. 19-23)

Join the Planet Patrol!  Learn about our amazing Earth and how you can help protect it.  Take a whirl wind tour of our beautiful planet and examine Earth’s many unique habitats and the animals that live in them.  Dive deep and explore our amazing oceans. Investigate the world of weather, from the bright and beautiful to the wild and crazy.   Discover geological phenomena like earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Find out how you can help conserve our planet, meet the H2O Hero, and visit Science on a Sphere!

Full Day Camps for Ages 6–8

Summer Fun Week — Week 1

Week 1 (June 24–28)

Jump into summer with a week full of classic RMSC activities, Curiosity Camp favorites, and S.T.E.M. challenges that are F-U-N.  Launch rockets, construct volcanoes, help our mastodon brush his teeth, and find out what it takes to make things fly and go splaaaaat!  Use the 40-foot Planetarium tower to conduct an egg drop challenge and test out Galileo’s law of falling objects. Hop, skip, and jump your way through sidewalk games using sidewalk chalk and bouncy balls that you made yourself.  Roll up your sleeves for some of RMSC’s famous MESS-tival activities and study the exciting science of gross-ology. Visit the Strasenburgh Planetarium, Inventor Center, Electricity Theater, and SO MUCH MORE!!!

Discovering Dinos – Week 2

Week 2 (July 1-3, 5*)

Discovering Dinos, July 1st–3rd:  Dinosaurs!!!  Who doesn’t love dinosaurs?  Travel back in time to the Jurassic and Mesozoic era and explore their larger-than-life world.  Get answers to questions as big as the dinos themselves: How big were they really? What did their habitat look like?  How do we know they were here? And where did they go? Examine the fossil record, discover some of the most outrageous species of dinosaurs, and have a tyrannosaurus-sized good time.

Flashback Friday, July 5th:  Now that you’ve finished exploring the days of dinosaurs, flash forward in time and visit Renaissance Italy, 19th Century Rochester, and Haudenosaunee villages.  Marvel at the architecture of the ancient world and the technologically advanced Erie Canal.

The Greatest Adventure — Week 2 -- SOLD OUT

Week 2 (July 1-3, 5*)

The Greatest Adventure, July 1st-3rd:  Embark on some of the greatest adventures the world has ever known—both real and imagined—and discover science along the way.  Sail the seven seas, conquer the cold on a polar expedition, blast off into space, and venture into the wild to explore the animal kingdom… but to survive each adventure, you’ll need to solve a special STEM challenge! 

Flashback Friday, July 5th:  Complete your week of adventure with a journey that has captivated imaginations for centuries… time travel.  Visit Renaissance Italy, 19th Century Rochester, and Haudenosaunee villages.  Marvel at the architecture of the ancient world and the technologically advanced Erie Canal.

Artist's Lab— Week 3 -- SOLD OUT

Week 3 (July 8-12)

Creativity and scientific thinking go hand-in-hand in this classic Curiosity Camps program.  Let your imagination run the show as you make your own art supplies, use technology to brighten your projects, and learn to look at art in a whole new way.  Make a portfolio and bring your works of art home to show them off to your family and friends.

Candy Chemistry — Week 3 -- SOLD OUT

 

Week 3 (July 8-12)

A spoonful of C12H22O11 helps the science go down?!?  There’s a real art—and lots of science—to making candy!  Get ready to mix and experiment as we use our favorite sugary treats to discover the world of chemistry.  See how sugar crystalizes into candy, investigate the artificial coloring that makes candy so appealing, learn how chocolate melts, make your own candy, and so much more.  Complex chemistry has never tasted so sweet!

Note: Due to the wide use of food products throughout the week of activities, this camp is not recommended for campers with severe food allergies.

EV3 Robotics Explorers — Week 3 -- SOLD OUT

Week 3 (July 8-12)

Use the Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics system to build your own robot.  Working as a team, you will build and learn to control a sophisticated robot.  Get a hands-on introduction to everything that the field of robotics has in store for you.  Use an infrared remote control to conquer a series of engineering challenges, modifying the robot design to complete the challenges with maximum efficiency.

Animal Extravaganza — Week 4 -- SOLD OUT

Week 4 (July 15-19)

It’s a week of animals so spectacular it can only be called an Animal Extravaganza!  Whether you’re an early bird, a one-trick pony, a fish out of water, or even a grumpy cat; you’ll jump for joy and leap head first into a week of animal fun.  Explore them all—from tiny to gigantic, fuzzy to slimy, gentle to ferocious—and find out what they eat, where they live, how they defend themselves, and so much more…  This extravagant experience includes 3, count ’em 3(!), animal meet and greets… see how we care for RMSC’s Inquiry Room animals, go on a field trip to the Seneca Park Zoo, and take in a special animal show with the Wildlife Rockstars.

Destination Space — Week 4 -- SOLD OUT

Week 4 (July 15-19)

50 years ago mankind took a giant leap and made that important small step onto the moon.  Celebrate this epic achievement by reliving that journey and embarking on your own space adventure.  Launch rockets and experiment with propulsion and trajectory. Then blast off to the moon and learn all about the moon itself and the historic landing.  While you’re up there, fly by the sun (don’t get too close!), tour our solar system, and head into the cosmos to see some constellations, explore the Milky Way, and investigate deep space oddities.  Make multiple trips to the Strasenburgh Planetarium to augment your journey.

Use the Lego Mindstorms EV3 Robotics system to build your own robot.  Working as a team, you will build and learn to control a sophisticated robot.  Get a hands-on introduction to everything that the field of robotics has in store for you.  Use an infrared remote control to conquer a series of engineering challenges, modifying the robot design to complete the challenges with maximum efficiency.

Abracadabra Academy— Week 5 -- SOLD OUT

Week 5 (July 22-26)

You won’t believe your eyes!  Is it magic or is it science? Enroll in Abracadabra Academy and use science to become a magician extraordinaire.  Create optical illusions, make things disappear, and find out if the hand really is quicker than the eye. Enter the world of wizardry and try your hand at mixing magical potions and caring for fantastical beasts.  Take part in an extra-special workshop with Mario the Maker Magician** and cap off your week by watching Mario perform.

Jump into summer with a week full of classic RMSC activities, Curiosity Camp favorites, and S.T.E.M. challenges that are F-U-N.  Launch rockets, construct volcanoes, help our mastodon brush his teeth, and find out what it takes to make things fly and go splaaaaat!  Use the 40-foot Planetarium tower to conduct an egg drop challenge and test out Galileo’s law of falling objects. Animals at Night, July 1st-3rd:  Ever wonder what the animals are up to while you’re asleep and dreaming?  Ever wonder what goes on in your backyard when the sun goes down? Or better yet, whooo comes out in the dark?  Explore the dark side of wildlife and discover how bats, owls, and other nocturnal animals are adapted to life at night.  Put your own night vision skills to the test, learn about echo-location, and make your very own bat house to take home. Head outdoors and explore working in the exciting field of archaeology.  Uncover the history of the early pioneers in the settlement known as Frost Town on the grounds of Cumming Nature Center.   Plan the excavation, open test units, and find real artifacts from the 200 year-old settlement.

Note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Survivor @Cumming Nature Center— Week 8 -- SOLD OUT 

Week 8 (Aug. 12-16)

Discover what it takes to survive in the wilderness.  Construct outdoor shelters, build solar stills, and light a fire with just one match.  Learn to navigate the forests at Cumming Nature Center with and without a compass. Gain valuable experience in first aid and wilderness survival.  An optional overnight on Thursday will provide the opportunity to put your newly acquired skills to the test.

EV3 Innovators— Week 9

Week 9 (Aug. 19-23)

Take EV3 Robotics to another level.  Challenge yourself to build a robotic elephant, puppy, monster, crane, or other advanced robot.  But building is only half the challenge! Program your robot to complete complex tasks. Display your work in one of our museum galleries at our EV3 Expo.

Extended Care Options

Extended care is available Monday- Friday for Almost Camps (BEFORE Care Only) and Full Day Camps, but is NOT available for Mini Camps. Registration for Extended Care is required.

BEFORE Care

7:45-9am $20/week

Supervised, unstructured playtime monitored by camp staff.

AFTER Care

4:15-5:30pm $25*/week

Structured, exploration time in smaller group settings--choose the elective that’s right for your camper!

Choose between:

  • Movie Buffs: Enjoy your favorite feature films up on our big screen. All movies shown are age appropriate and rated either G or PG.
  • KEVA Club: Take your tower-building skills to the next level as you construct wooden towers and structures with the ever popular KEVA Planks.
  • Board Gamers: Challenge your friends to a classic board game—chess, Battleship, Clue, Candy Land, Monopoly, Sorry!, Life, Connect Four and more!

BEFORE & AFTER Care Combo:

Need extra time before and after the camp day? Save $5 when you sign up for both Before Care and After Care.

7:45-9am AND 4:15-5:30pm $40*/week

 

*A late fee of $10/camper will be charged for campers that have not been picked up by 5:30pm. A late fee of $40/camper will be charged for campers that have not been picked up by 5:45pm.


Camp Scholarship

The Eva Howe Stevens Scholarship at the Rochester Museum & Science Center provides limited financial assistance to young people in need who are residents of Monroe County and can benefit from offerings at the RMSC. Applicants must be residents of Monroe County and meet financial guidelines for consideration.
