Summer Curiosity Camps

Join us for a summer of science, discovery, and messy experiments! We’ve got nine week-long sessions of Curiosity Camp, with diverse offerings for ages 2-15. Hunt for sea slug dragons, cook up a storm (and an experiment) in the kitchen, and engineer a toy (or a tower or a technological innovation). We hope you join us! Find out more below.

Important Camp Information

  • Prior to registering, please review our Curiosity Camps 2021 Information & Policies for all of the additional information you’ll need to know before your camper's first day!
  • To register, explore Camps by Age below and sign up online. Need help? Call our Member & Visitor Services team at 585.697.1942.
  • Please note that each camper must have a completed Annual Camper Information and Medical Form for 2021 on file prior to their arrival at camp. Registrations are not complete until this form has been submitted.
  • Registration is required prior to the start of camp. Enrollment is limited; early registration recommended.
  • Campers are grouped based on their ages at the start of camp.
  • You may not register another person’s camper. If your camper plans to attend camp with a friend, please let us know during registration so that we can group them accordingly.
  • All campers must bring their own snack. Almost and Full Day Campers must also bring their own lunch.
  • Extended Care is available.

 

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

  • For camps on the museum campus, drop-off and pick-up take place in the Eisenhart Auditorium (not the main museum building) located on the RMSC campus at 657 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607.

  • Times vary depending on the camper’s age and type of camp:

    • Mini Camps | AM Session

      • Drop-off between 8:50 AM - 9 AM

      • Pick-up at 11:30 AM

    • Mini Camps | PM Session 

      • Drop-off between 12:50 PM - 1 PM

      • Pick-up at 3:30 PM

    • Almost Camps

      • Drop-off between 8:45 AM - 9:15 AM. Campers arriving before 8:45 AM will need to register for Before Care.

      • Pick-up at 2:30 PM. After Care is not available for Almost Camps. All Almost Campers must be picked up at 2:30 PM.

    • Full Day Camps

      • Drop-off between 8:45 AM - 9:15 AM. Campers arriving before 8:45 AM will need to register for Before Care.

      • Pick up between 3:45 PM - 4:15 PM. Campers who are not picked up by 4:15 PM will be placed in After Care, and families will be charged accordingly.

  • Authorized pick-ups must present a photo ID every time they come to pick up a camper.
  • In the event your camper needs to be picked up early, please write the early pick-up time on that day’s sign-in sheet and notify a member of Camp Administration. In the event of an emergency, call Camp Administration at 585.271.4552 ext. 601 or Member & Visitor Services at 585.697.1942.
  • Please note that early pick-ups between 3:30 - 3:45 PM are not always possible as groups are transitioning from their classrooms to dismissal.

Extended Care Options

Need extra time before and after the camp day? Join us for extra science fun with unstructured exploration in small group settings. Save $5 when you sign up for the whole week!

  • Before Care (available for Almost and Full Day Campers): $5/day or $20/week
    • Before Care runs from 7:45 - 9:00am
  • After Care (available for Full Day Campers): $5/day or $20/week
    • After Care runs from 4:15 - 5:30pm

Campers that have not been picked up by 4:15 PM will be enrolled in After Care and charged accordingly. Campers that have not been picked up by 5:30 PM will be charged a $10 late fee. Campers that have not been picked up by 5:45 will be charged a $25 late fee.

Camp Scholarships

The Eva Howe Stevens Scholarship at the Rochester Museum & Science Center provides limited financial assistance to young people in need who are residents of Monroe County and can benefit from offerings at the RMSC. Applicants must be residents of Monroe County and meet financial guidelines for consideration.

Types of Camp

Different camp structures are available based on the age of your campers: 

Mini Camps (Ages 2-5)

Introduce your youngest campers to hands-on science and summer fun in activities that help campers prepare for preschool and learn through play in a social setting. Campers must bring their own snack. Please note that Extended Care is not available for Mini Campers.

AM Session: 9 - 11:30am

PM Session: 1 - 3:30pm

Not quite ready for a drop-off program? Join us for 2-3 Family Camps, our science start-up for our youngest campers and one of their caregivers. Explore, learn, and get messy—together!  We’ll model activities, give suggestions for take-home extender experiments, and talk you through getting slime on your slacks.

Almost Camps (Ages 5-7)

For “almost” a full day, Almost Campers enjoy fun and enriching learning experiences and explore the museum while preparing for a full-day program.  Campers must bring their own snack and lunch.

Almost Camp day: 9am - 2:30pm (Before Care available)

Full Day Camps (Ages 6-15)

Full Day Campers spend the whole day exploring the wonderful ways science opens up our eyes to the world! Investigate STEM topics, wander the halls of the museum, let your curiosity run wild! Campers must bring their own snack and lunch.

Some camps take place at the Cumming Nature Center and include transportation from the museum in the camp registration fee. These camps are indicated by a bus icon.

Full Day Camp day: 9am - 4pm (Before and After Care available)

Space Race — SOLD OUT — Week 1

Week 1 (June 28-July 2)

Let’s race into space and become the first campers to play amongst the stars. Zoom to the moon, explore the solar system, and journey into the cosmos to see what an amazing place space really is. Launch rockets, hunt for aliens, and visit the exhibits at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Week 3 (July 12-16)

Can you name the colors of the rainbow? Spin the color wheel, and experiment with shadows and light. Mix new colors, and use them to create artistic masterpieces. Head outside to discover all the colors in nature, and meet our friend Roy G. Biv. Explore the science behind rainbows themselves, and follow one to the end to find a pot of gold!

Week 4 (July 19–23)

The train is in the station, and it’s waiting just for you! Grab your tickets, and hop on board to learn all about trains, boats, buses, cars, planes, and more! Find out where they go, what they do, and how they help us explore the world around us. Jump into the fascinating world of physics, and discover what makes these machines go. Week 5 (July 26-30)

Can you growl like a tiger? Howl like a wolf? Roar like a lion? Some of the scariest animals are actually the friendliest. Whether they swim, fly, or run, discover some of the fiercest animals on the planet. Use some of your storytime favorites to learn about the real deal: help Goldilocks confront the three bears, withstand a huff and a puff from the Big Bad Wolf, and discover the underwater world of Mommy and Daddy Shark (doo doo, doo doo da doo).

Snug as a Bug — Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 9-13)

Did you know there are more insect species on the planet than any other species?! It’s enough to drive you buggy. Investigate the itty bitty world of bugs in Snug as a Bug. Learn about flying flies, bumbling bumblebees, creepy crawly ants, and even itsy bitsy spiders. Go on a bug hunt, make some teeny tiny friends, and design your own bug to take home and spook your family.

Week 1 (June 28-July 2)

Tie up your apron, grab some goggles, and get ready to get messy! We're headed on a rollercoaster ride through a mad scientist's lab. Cook up some smelly kitchen chemistry, and design experiments to investigate (and then defy) gravity and density. And of course, get up to your elbows in slime, oobleck, and more slime! You've got to admit—all the best science is sticky!

Week 2 (July 5-9)

Don a safety vest and a hard hat, then head to our classroom construction site for the week! We'll make art with ramps, bulldozers, and dump trucks. Learn how to work together to get the job done; then kick back with your friends, the RMSC Construction Crew!

Week 3 (July 12-16)

Let's go for a dip! Or maybe a submarine dive! We're headed below the surface this week as we explore water, weather, and waves, how boats float (and sink), and unbelievable ocean animals that glow. Explore the states of matter, and melt iceberg obstacles to rescue arctic animals. Bring your poncho; you've got a front row seat in the splash zone!

Week 4 (July 19-23)

Get ready for another messy week at Curiosity Camps! We're painting, sculpting, and drawing—with science! Create splatter art with paint-loaded rubber bands, and take your watercolors to the next level with some chemical reactions. Balance and build sculptures and mobiles. Then think outside the box as we explore song singing, storytelling, and other arts that'll get us to move and groove.

Dinosaurs 101 — SOLD OUT — Week 5

Week 5 (July 26–30)

Spend the week covering dinosaurs and their facts and features—from A to Z. Take the Tyrannosaurus challenge, stomp like a Stegosaurus, and blur the boundary between bird and dinosaur with an Archaeopterx. Carefully dust off fossils and artifacts, piece together skeletons, and see if you can make the next big find in paleontology.

Week 6 (Aug. 2-6)

Dig up some fun, and plant the seed for a week of adventure as we explore the natural world all around us. Stroll through the RMSC’s gardens, and check out our rooftop rain garden (with your feet planted safely on the ground below). RMSC Robotics Explorers — SOLD OUT — Week 1

Week 1 (June 28–July 2)

Get ready for a hands-on introduction to robotics in RSMC Robotics Explorers. We'll experiment with a variety of different robotics systems to learn about programming, design thinking, and problem solving. Working as a team, you will build and learn to control a LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robot. Using an infrared remote control, tackle our gauntlet of engineering challenges and modify your robot design to reach the finish line with maximum efficiency.

It’s a festival of messes! Roll up your sleeves, and get ready to get messy with some hands-on science fun. Up, up, and away! Spend the week in the air investigating aviation of all sorts. Explore animals that fly, glide, flap, and soar. Inspired by nature (and backed by Bernoulli), innovate the ultimate paper airplane, drop an egg from the planetarium tower, and launch rockets. Don't forget to check out the weather above the clouds and report your forecast back at the RMSC's Adventure Zone!

Week 2 (July 5-9)

A spoonful of C12H22O11 helps the science go down?! There’s a real art—and lots of science—to making candy! Get ready to mix and experiment as we use our favorite sugary treats to discover the world of chemistry. Week 3 (July 12-16)

Make your own movie, and show it on the giant screen that is our planetarium dome. Spend the week inside the Strasenburgh Planetarium to learn the art of animation and produce a stop-motion movie. Create characters, sketch a storyboard, set the scene, and work as a team to produce a short animated film. Then invite your family to a film premiere inside the Strasenburgh Planetarium itself!

Week 3 (July 12-16)

Become part of an elite team of astronauts as you prepare to launch the first human-led mission to Mars. Let our Strasenburgh Planetarium classroom become your mission control center as you conquer 21st century challenges with your team. Outfit your base with the latest life support technology, learn how to grow your own food in space, and use 3D printers to fabricate the tools you will need to explore this harsh new world. Program robot helpers to assist you with exploring the planet, maintaining your base, and providing entertainment to keep your team's morale high. Search for signs of life on Mars, and hone your communication skills to make sure you are prepared if you do encounter other life forms!

Fashion From Scratch — SOLD OUT — Week 4

Week 4 (July 19-23)

Create a garment, accessory, or something completely different! But do it from scratch! Repurpose food scraps for fabric dye, capture images in cross-stitch, and manufacture your own patterns and prints. Make your mark with a squeegee and a silk screen, and think outside the box with LEDs, wearable technology, and state-of-the-art prosthetics. Then bring it all together, and showcase your final design!

Week 4 (July 19-23)

Campers will learn basic coding skills that will empower them to construct their own mobile games and apps. Campers will move through coding processes and skills like drag and drop programming to basic app design and the construction of a self-designed mobile app. Learning at their own pace, campers from all ability and experience levels will foster logic skills, organization, sequencing, and computational and algorithmic thinking.

Ever wonder what really goes on at a museum? Find out with an all-access pass to the RMSC's exhibit halls and collection vaults! Led by museum staff, learn firsthand how to collect and care for objects, tour galleries, design your own scaled-down exhibition, and take a closer look at how programming comes to life. Then create your own activity or experience to test out with fellow campers!

Get ready to leave your modern-day luxuries behind and head off the grid! We'll learn to fend for ourselves in this survival skills crash course. Explore gardening, composting, and preserving as you shorten your food chain. Consider water, lighting, and housing―from backcountry shelters to tiny houses. Power your phone by solar power, and learn how to entertain without electricity. Think you can hack it? We'll see you Off the Grid!

Tune up your bike skills in this week-long camp all about Cycle Science! Learn how to fix simple repairs and perform routine maintenance, upcycle bike tubes and design futuristic safety fashion, and explore urban planning and bike boulevards. Think outside the box in your bike use (Rube Goldberg―ooh!), and take a two-wheeled field trip. Learn about changemakers in cyclist history; then go big, and become one yourself!

Week 6 (Aug. 9-13)

Debunk science fiction fantasies and search for loopholes and plot gaps in Fact or Fiction: Sci-Fi Edition. Learn what gizmos and gadgets are beyond today's technology―and which in fact inspired our very own handheld devices. Race floating hovercrafts, and design and prototype podracers. Get cozy in our time travel think tank, and gear up to terraform Mars. Then take what you've learned and build your own wonderful world. Think big, but think critically! It can be difficult to tell what's fact―and what's science fiction!
