Summer Curiosity Camps

Join us for a summer of science, discovery, and messy experiments! We’ve got eight week-long sessions, with diverse offerings for ages 2-15. Hunt for sea slug dragons, cook up a storm (and an experiment) in the kitchen, and engineer a toy (or a tower or a technological innovation). We hope you join us! Find out more below.

Important Camp Information

  • Prior to registering, please review our Curiosity Camps 2022 Information & Policies for all of the additional information you’ll need to know before your camper's first day! We’ll also send this document out via email the week before you attend camp.
  • To register, explore Camps by Age below and sign up online. Need help? Call our Guest Services team at 585.271.4320.
  • Please note that each camper must have a completed Annual Camper Information and Medical Form for 2022 on file prior to their arrival at camp. Registrations are not complete until this form has been submitted.
    • If your camper will be bringing or taking medication while at camp, please also complete our Medication Form.
  • Registration is required prior to the start of camp. Enrollment is limited; early registration recommended.
  • Campers are grouped based on their ages at the start of camp.
  • You may not register another person’s camper. If your camper plans to attend camp with a friend, please let us know during registration so that we can group them accordingly.
  • All campers must bring their own snack. Almost and Full Day Campers must also bring their own lunch.
  • Extended Care is available.

 

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

  • For camps at the Museum & Science Center, drop-off and pick-up take place in the Eisenhart Auditorium (not the main museum building) located on the RMSC Rochester campus at 657 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607.

  • Times vary depending on the camper’s age and type of camp:

    Mini Camps | AM Session

    Drop-off between 8:50am - 9am

    Pick-up at 11:30am

    Mini Camps | PM Session 

    • Drop-off between 12:50pm - 1pm

    • Pick-up at 3:30pm

       

      Almost Camps

      • Drop-off between 8:45am - 9:15am. Campers arriving before 8:45am will need to register for Before Care.

      • Pick-up at 2:30pm. After Care is not available for Almost Camps. All Almost Campers must be picked up at 2:30pm.

       

      Full Day Camps

      • Drop-off between 8:45am - 9:15am. Campers arriving before 8:45am will need to register for Before Care.

      • Pick up between 3:45pm - 4:15pm. Campers who are not picked up by 4:15pm will be placed in After Care, and families will be charged accordingly.

      • Authorized pick-ups must present a photo ID every time they come to pick up a camper.
      • In the event your camper needs to be picked up early, please write the early pick-up time on that day’s sign-in sheet and notify a member of Camp Administration. In the event of an emergency, call 585.271.4320.
      • Please note that early pick-ups between 3:30 - 3:45pm are not always possible as groups are transitioning from their classrooms to dismissal.

Extended Care Options

Need extra time before and after the camp day? Join us for extra science fun with unstructured exploration in small group settings. Save $5 when you sign up for the whole week!

  • Before Care (available for Almost and Full Day Campers): $6/day or $25/week
    • Before Care runs from 7:45 - 9:00am
  • After Care (available for Full Day Campers): $6/day or $25/week
    • After Care runs from 4:15 - 5:30pm

Campers that have not been picked up by 4:15pm will be enrolled in After Care and charged accordingly. Campers that have not been picked up by 5:30pm will be charged a $10 late fee. Campers that have not been picked up by 5:45 will be charged a $25 late fee.

Please note that Extended Care is not available for Mini Campers.

Camp Scholarships

The RMSC is a place that inspires and equips students to follow their own curiosity, where they can experience new delight and wonder upon each visit or dive into specific subjects to participate in solving the deepest challenges of our times. It is a place where each learner is encouraged to follow their own unique journey.

Financial assistance is available for programming across the RMSC. Scholarships are available for school groups within Monroe County, as well as individuals who would like to attend RMSC Curiosity Camp. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. 

Applications for Summer Curiosity Camps are accepted on a rolling basis and are dependant on available funds.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

Refund and Cancellation Policy

Refund Policy

All withdrawals will be charged a processing fee ($50 for a Full Day Camp, $20 for an Almost or Mini Camp).

  • Withdrawals that occur more than 17 days before the start of camp will receive a full refund.
  • Withdrawals that occur between 17 and 10 days before the start of camp will receive a 50% refund.
  • Withdrawals that occur less than 10 days before the start of camp will not receive a refund.

 

Cancellation Policy

Camps that do not meet minimum enrollment requirements are subject to cancellation. If your registered camp is canceled due to enrollment requirements, you will be issued a full refund or credit towards a future registration or transferred to another camp that week.

If the RMSC and/or Curiosity Camps is closed due to COVID-19, we will issue you a refund or credit towards a future registration.


Types of Camp

Different camp structures are available based on the age of your campers: 

Mini Camps (Ages 2-5)

Introduce your youngest campers to hands-on science and summer fun in activities that help campers prepare for preschool and learn through play in a social setting. Campers must bring their own snack. Please note that Extended Care is not available for Mini Campers.

AM Session: 9am - 11:30am

PM Session: 1pm - 3:30pm

Not quite ready for a drop-off program? Join us for 2-3 Family Camps, our science start-up for our youngest campers and one of their caregivers. Explore, learn, and get messy—together!  We’ll model activities, give suggestions for take-home extender experiments, and talk you through getting slime on your slacks.

Almost Camps (Ages 5-7)

For “almost” a full day, Almost Campers enjoy fun and enriching learning experiences and explore the museum while preparing for a full-day program.  Campers must bring their own snack and lunch.

Almost Camp day: 9am - 2:30pm (Before Care available)

Full Day Camps (Ages 6-15)

Full Day Campers spend the whole day exploring the wonderful ways science opens up our eyes to the world! Investigate STEM topics, wander the halls of the museum, let your curiosity run wild! Campers must bring their own snack and lunch.

Full Day Camp day: 9am - 4pm (Before and After Care available)

Age groups: 6-8, 9-11, 12-15

Curiosity Odyssey — Week 3 - SOLD OUT

Week 3 (July 18 - 22)

Let's get messy as we explore science through sensory play! Explore different sights, smells, textures, and sounds as you ask questions and use your senses to find the answers. Mix fizzing potions, stretch slime, make magic with magnets, and more. We're on a journey to learn!

Space Cadets — Week 4

Week 4 (July 25 - 29)

Let’s race to space and play among the stars! Zoom to the moon, explore the solar system, and journey into the cosmos to see what an amazing place space really is. Launch rockets, hunt for aliens, and visit the exhibits at the Strasenburgh Planetarium for more fun!

Over the Rainbow — Week 5

Week 5 (August 1 - 5)

Can you name the colors of the rainbow? Spin the color wheel and experiment with shadows and light! Mix new colors and use them to create artistic masterpieces. Head outside to discover all the colors in nature, and meet our friend Roy G. Biv. Explore the science behind rainbows themselves, then follow one to the end to find a pot of gold!

The Great Outdoors — Week 6

Week 6 (August 8 - 12)

Did you know there are more insect species on the planet than any other species!? Join us as we head outside to investigate the itty bitty world of bugs—and beyond! Tend to the Curiosity Camps garden, then harvest plants for natural dyes. Monitor the weather and conduct sidewalk science using the sun. From art to engineering, it's all happening in the Great Outdoors!

Astronaut Adventures — Week 1 - SOLD OUT

Week 1 (July 5 - 8)

Are you into outer space? We are! Join us for a week of Astronaut Adventures and explore our galaxy's planets, stars, and moons. Investigate rockets and spaceships, then design your own interstellar vehicle! Trace pictures and patterns in space dust, connect constellations, then celebrate your safe journey home with a visit to the Strasenburgh Planetarium!

The Next Nobel — Week 2

Week 2 (July 11 - 15)

Calling all curiosity seekers! This camp is all about serious (and sometimes silly) science, investigation, and discovery. Balance and build as you learn about bridges and towers. Learn the states of matter, then turn them upside down with Oobleck! Use the RMSC's gardens for some backyard biology, and launch a rocket (or two). You're bound to end up with the next Nobel!

Don a safety vest and a hard hat, then head to our classroom construction site for the week! Make art with ramps, bulldozers, and dump trucks. Get funky with physics as you build towers, bridges, and inclines—both large and small. Then knock them down (or maybe blow them up)! 3, 2, 1.... GO!

Storyteller Science — Week 4

Week 4 (July 25 - 29)

Once upon a time, there was a camp at the RMSC... and you're invited! Learn how to piece together a story, create your own characters, and build a tissue box puppet theater. Hear Haudenosaunee stories and tales of Rochester's past, then stretch your imagination and fabricate some fiction.

Mini Masterpieces — Week 5

Week 5 (August 1 - 5)

Get ready for another messy week at Curiosity Camp! We're painting, sculpting, and drawing—with science! Create splatter art with paint-loaded rubber bands, and take your watercolors to the next level with a chemical reaction. Balance and build sculptures and mobiles. Then think outside the box as we explore song singing, storytelling, and other arts that'll get us to move and groove.

Dinosaurs 101 — Week 6 - SOLD OUT

Week 6 (August 8 - 12)

Spend the week discovering dinosaurs and their facts and features—from A to Z. Take the Tyrannosaurus challenge, stomp like a Stegosaurus, and blur the boundary between bird and dinosaur with an Archaeopteryx. Carefully dust off fossils and artifacts, piece together skeletons, and see if you can make the next big find in paleontology.

Mini Med School — Week 2

Week 2 (July 11 - 15)

Enroll today in Mini Med School at the RMSC, the only medical school to accept four year olds! Once we look the part, we'll get down to business and learn all about the human body. Add characters with Jurassic personalities, deliver punchlines, drag out dramas, and publish a tale worthy of a Hugo Award (and maybe a spin-off or two). This adventure is up to you!

Week 6 (August 8 - 12)

Make Expedition Earth your home for the week in this camp all about prehistoric periods. Wonder at Ice Age megafauna, roam with dinosaurs and soar with pterodactyls, then head back to homebase to record your findings on the cave (or classroom) wall. Weave a basket for gathering supplies and cast your own fossils in clay. Learn about ancient tools and the history of innovation―from Caveman Camp all the way to modern-day civilization.

Calling all puzzle piecers and riddle solvers, this camp is for you! Join us for a week of treasure maps and scavenger hunts as we explore all the ways people hunt for treasure. Plot like a pirate and check out the RMSC's own collections... but it won't be easy! Decode secret messages, think outside the box, and make sure to look in every nook and cranny. You never know what you'll find!

Dinosaurs, sharks, and praying mantises―oh my! Learn all about big cats, the inner workings of a food web, and unexpected predators. Week 3 (July 18 - 22)

Podcasting is a form of mass communication and has gotten very popular over the last few years. In fact, the majority of our country has listened to at least one audio episode in their lifetime (with a quarter of the population tuning in regularly each week)! Join us as we learn the organizational, writing, speaking, and technical skills needed to succeed in this digital frontier―from the professionals themselves! Led by our friends at ROC Vox Recording and Production, master the basics, produce your own podcast, and find your voice!

Week 3 (July 18 - 22)

Ever wonder what really goes on at a museum? Find out with an all access pass to the RMSC's exhibit halls and collection vaults―and office spaces?! We're headed to the Education Department this summer! Led by museum staff, tour galleries, research artifacts, and take a closer look at how programming comes to life. Then, create your very own experience to take over the Science Encounter cart! See you on the museum floor!

Cycle Science — Week 4

Week 4 (July 25 - 29)

Tune up your bike skills in this week-long camp all about Cycle Science! Learn how to fix simple repairs and perform routine maintenance, upcycle bike tubes and design futuristic safety fashion, and explore urban planning and bike boulevards. Think outside the box in your bike use (Rube Goldberg―ooh!) and take a two-wheeled field trip. Learn about Changemakers in cyclist history; then go big and become one yourself!

Coding & App Development —Week 4 - SOLD OUT

Week 4 (July 25 - 29)

Campers will learn basic coding skills that will empower them to construct their own mobile games and apps. Campers will move through the whole process―from drag and drop programming to basic app design and the construction of a self-designed mobile app! Learning at their own pace, campers of all abilities and experience levels will foster logic skills, organization, sequencing, and computational and algorithmic thinking.

Animation at the Strasenburgh Planetarium — Week 5 - SOLD OUT

Week 5 (August 1 - 5)

Make your own movie and show it on the giant screen that is our Planetarium dome. Spend the week inside the Strasenburgh Planetarium to learn the art of animation and produce a stop-motion movie. Create characters, sketch a storyboard, set the scene, and work as a team to produce a short animated film. Then, invite your family to a film premiere inside the Strasenburgh Planetarium itself!

Quick, grab a paintbrush―and a ladder?! We've got a wall to paint! Join us for a week of art making as we take over the RMSC's café with local artists Shawnee Hill and Matthew Roberts. Design, create, and collaborate as a group to transform our space with a temporary mural. Get ready to fuel some curiosity!

Fantastic Finds & Flips— Week 6 - SOLD OUT

Week 6 (August 8 - 12)

Take thrifting to the next level in this camp dedicated to the DIY movement. Shop the RMSC's annual New-to-You sale early―but don't stop there! Transform furniture and household objects into fancy flips, creative crafts, and maybe a science experiment or two. Reduce, reuse, upcycle?!

Campers are provided resources to "shop" the New-to-You sale. Campers do not need to bring in additional money to participate in this camp.

Week 6 (August 8 - 12)

Boot up and get ready for some player-versus-player fun! Experience the best the gaming world has to offer―from the tabletop to the laptop. Earn XP as you sharpen your STEM skills battling monsters and seeking treasure in a tabletop game of your own design. Explore game theory, play award-winning board games, and use Sphero robots as programmable players. Get ready to Level Up!
