Summer Curiosity Camps at Cumming Nature Center

Discover natural science as a fun & creative way to explore the wonders of our world with Summer Curiosity Camps at the Cumming Nature Center! If you're familiar with the Forest School curriculum, these camps are an extension of that program. Each camp, led by an experienced Forest School educator, offers a variety of themes for different ages. With 900+ acres and 15 miles of trail, campers learn basic wilderness skills, nature science, outdoor team-building activities, nature awareness, and more. Camps days in the beautiful, natural surroundings of Cumming Nature Center offer an ideal setting for each discovery-based camp, creating summer memories that won't be forgotten.

Please note that all camps take place at Cumming Nature Center and transportation is not provided for most camps.

Important Camp Information

  • Prior to registering, please review our Camp Information & Policies for all of the additional information you’ll need to know before your campers first day!
  • To register call 585.697.1942 or explore Camps by Age below to register online. Registration is required prior to the start of camp.
  • Campers are grouped based on the age of the child at the time of the camp.
  • You may not register other people's children. If your camper plans to attend the same camp with a friend please indicate that upon registration so we can group them accordingly.
  • Early registration is recommended!  We do NOT have a waiting list and enrollment is limited.
  • Check-in: For camps at Cumming Nature Center, check-in takes place at the Nature Center unless otherwise noted.
  • Almost & Full Day Campers must bring their own lunch.
  • Extended Care is available.

Types of Camp

Different camp structures are available based on the age of your campers:

Almost Camps at CNC

For “almost” a full day, Almost Campers enjoy fun and enriching learning activities and museum exploration as they prepare for a full-day program. Lunch is NOT provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch.  Transportation is NOT provided from the RMSC to Cumming Nature Center, Naples

9am-2:30pm

Full Day Camps at CNC

Full Day campers spend the whole day exploring the fun & creative ways that science (and a wide variety of other STEM topics) helps us explore the wonders of our world! Lunch is NOT provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch.  Transportation is provided for SOME of these camps, indicated by the bus icon 

The wonder of the woods comes to life for forest fairies! Children can nurture their intrinsic relationship with nature through unstructured play, curiosity-driven exploratory learning, basic craft, and outdoor adventure skills, all within a physically safe and emotionally supportive environment. With nature as our classroom, guide, and companion, our daily activities are based on fostering purposeful craft, thoughtful observation, and eager exploration.

*Please note: This almost camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center in Naples.  Transportation from RMSC is not provided for this camp.  Check-in will be at Cumming Nature Center.  This is a 4 day camp session.  There will be no Almost Camps on Thursday, July 4th

Curiosity Camps with Transportation to the Nature Center

Friends of the Forest @Cumming Nature Center — Week 6 

Week 6 (July 29- Aug. 2)

Ages 6-8

Calling all friends of the forest!  Explore the forests of the Cumming Nature Center and investigate the animal friends that live there!  Listen for birds, hunt for tracks, and leave no stone unturned in your quest to discover the animal world.  See where they live, what they eat, and how you can tell they were there. Hike to the Beaver Pond, explore the wilderness, and become one with the creatures in the woods.  

Note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

The Great Outdoors @Cumming Nature Center— Week 6 

Week 6 (July 29- Aug. 2)

Ages 9-11

Lace up your hiking boots and grab your trusty backpack, because we’re headed into the great outdoors!  Explore the forests of Cumming Nature Center and learn outdoor skills like fire building, creating a campsite, and finding your way through the woods.  Hit the trails to identify, appreciate, and preserve the trees, plants, and animals that call CNC’s forests home. Travel back to a time before cell phones, computers, and electronics and play the way kids did for generations before you… in the great outdoors! 

Please note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Jr. Naturalists @Cumming Nature Center — Week 7 

Week 7 (Aug. 5-9)

Ages 6-8

Discover the hidden clues in Mother Nature in a week of exploration at Cumming Nature Center.  Identify the trees & plants, witness the water cycle in action, and see conservation at work. Hike the miles of trails, experience the back woods, and join in hands-on enrichment activities as you become a junior naturalist.  

Note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Archaeology @Cumming Nature Center— Week 7 

Week 7 (Aug. 5-9)

Ages 12-15

Head outdoors and explore working in the exciting field of archaeology.  Uncover the history of the early pioneers in the settlement known as Frost Town on the grounds of Cumming Nature Center. Plan the excavation, open test units, and find real artifacts from the 200 year-old settlement.

Note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Survivor @Cumming Nature Center— Week 8 

Week 8 (Aug. 12-16)

Ages 12-15

Discover what it takes to survive in the wilderness.  Construct outdoor shelters, build solar stills, and light a fire with just one match.  Learn to navigate the forests at Cumming Nature Center with and without a compass. Gain valuable experience in first aid and wilderness survival.  An optional overnight on Thursday will provide the opportunity to put your newly acquired skills to the test.

Note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Extended Care Options

Extended care is available Monday- Friday for Almost Camps (BEFORE Care Only) and Full Day Camps, but is NOT available for Mini Camps. Registration for Extended Care is required.

BEFORE Care

7:45-9am $20/week

Supervised, unstructured playtime monitored by camp staff.

AFTER Care

4:15-5:30pm $25*/week

After care includes supervised, unstructured playtime as well as more structured exploration time in smaller group settings--choose the elective that’s right for your camper!

Choose between:

  • Movie Buffs: Enjoy your favorite feature films up on our big screen. All movies shown are age appropriate and rated either G or PG.
  • Board Gamers: Challenge your friends to a classic board game—chess, Battleship, Clue, Candy Land, Monopoly, Sorry!, Life, Connect Four and more!

BEFORE & AFTER Care Combo:

Need extra time before and after the camp day? Save $5 when you sign up for both Before Care and After Care.

7:45-9am AND 4:15-5:30pm $40*/week

 

*A late fee of $10/camper will be charged for campers that have not been picked up by 5:30pm. A late fee of $40/camper will be charged for campers that have not been picked up by 5:45pm.


Camp Scholarship

The Eva Howe Stevens Scholarship at the Rochester Museum & Science Center provides limited financial assistance to young people in need who are residents of Monroe County and can benefit from offerings at the RMSC. Applicants must be residents of Monroe County and meet financial guidelines for consideration.
