Weekend Wild Walks

Explore the Cumming Nature Center landscape with naturalist Shariee Edersheim and uncover the hidden gems and oft-overlooked magic of the forest and fields. These guided hikes are included in Nature Center admission, last about 90 minutes and traverse easy to moderate terrain. April and May hikes focus on wildflowers as they appear as the season progresses.

Wild Walks Schedule 

Beaver Ecology | 4.27 & 4.28
Explore the natural history of the beaver and their unique effect on surrounding ecosystems.

Birding Hike | 5.4
Grab your binoculars, or share some of ours. We will search various habitats near the nature center for spring migrants and breeding birds using clues such as song, sight, habitat, and more.

Mini Moss Garden Program | 5.5 
Bring your own small bowl or tray and come explore the ancient wonders of moss while creating our own special garden to take home. A few sample containers will be available.

Woodland Wildflowers and other Spring Ephemerals | 5.11 & 5.12
Search for early spring corollaries; learn more about the rare spreading globeflower (Trollius laxis) and other short-lived blooms of the season as we discover the wonders of woodland wildflowers.

Frogin’ Around Program | 5.18
Adventure into the world of amphibians! Learn about the life cycles of frogs and salamanders, and their importance to ecosystems. We will visit pools and ponds, search under creek rocks, and dip our nets in to see who we find and what we can carefully catch for a closer look! Wear your rubber boots!

A Snail’s Eye View | 5.19
Explore the miniature world of pixie cups, British Soldiers, and other tiny things!

Nature Detective | 5.25 & 5.26
Discover the signs of wildlife around us! Take the nature detective challenge!

Wild Pesto Foray | 6.1
Forage with us for springtime’s most tender and tasty wild edibles as we create a delicious and healthful wild pesto. Crackers provided!

Pond Exploration | 6.2
Discover the life within, below and on the surface of the pond from the smallest of animals to the largest of insect nymphs.

A Natural History of Cumming Nature Center’s Landscape | 6.8
On this walk you will hear about the natural and human-caused changes in the landscape of this region and area.

Tots n’ Tadpoles | 6.9
Grab your rubber boots and prepare to wonder at the amazing life cycle of our native frogs and toads.

Ticks! | 6.15
This seminar will explore the life cycle and the adaptability of ticks, and the rise of Lyme disease. Using microscopes and the latest information, we will help demystify the tick while we learn how we can better empower and protect ourselves in tick country.  

Pond Exploration | 6.16
Join a naturalist to discover the life in and around the pond!

Fairy Houses | 6.22
There is magic in the woods when we create fairy and gnome homes with all natural materials. Come get creative and bring your sense of wonder.

Beaver Ecology Walk | 6.23
Discover how beaver have created new habitat at Cumming Nature Center, their unique adaptations, and maybe even catch a glimpse of one!

Tree Identification | 6.29
For those who would like to move beyond just knowing an evergreen from a deciduous or an oak from a maple, come learn how to better identify individual species.

Nature Hike | 6.30
Join our naturalist for a whimsical wandering to see what’s up and  who’s out in the woods today.
