February Break Winter & Wildlife Week Activities

February 17 - 21

Each day during February break, the Cumming Nature Center will offer themed explorations for walk-in visitors and families. Programs and activities will be ongoing and will not require advanced registration. The Nature Center will be open every day from 9-3:30pm. Note that the Nature Center will be open on Monday and Tuesday in addition to our regular hours of operation. Check out the week’s schedule below!

Monday: Ski Lessons, Snowshoeing, Movies, and popcorn!

$15 per person | $25 per person with ski rental | Movies and popcorn free with admission

30-minute, family-friendly XC ski lessons will be offered at 11am and 1pm. Instructors will be available throughout the day to help with gear fitting and to offer ski and snowshoe tips and support. Enjoy movies in the theater and free popcorn, with or without snow!

 

Tuesday: Owls of Cumming Nature Center

Free with admission

Discover the wonders of the winged predators that make this region home, as well as other surprising owls who-who-who migrate here or pass on through. We’ll analyze owl pellets and create pinecone owls throughout the day. At 1pm, we will make screech owl nesting boxes to take home ($5, pre-registration by calling (585) 374-6160 is appreciated).

 

Wednesday: Snow Science Secrets

Free with admission

Discover the crystalline world of snow. Make a take-home snowflake, gaze at snowflakes under a microscope, help us make an outdoor Quintzee you can crawl inside of, and learn more about the physiology of snow during a 1pm walk.

 

Thursday: Tracking and Animal Signs

Free with admission

Wildlife is all around us, once we learn to read their signatures. Come test your track ID skills and make-a-track to take home. Enjoy a presentation on Stories-in-the-Snow at 1pm.

 

Friday: Live Animal Visitors!

Free with admission

Wild Wings will be visiting us at 11am with special animal guests that you can view and learn more about. At 1pm we will hold a naturalist-led hike to search for animal signs.
