Winter Secrets - Ages 6-8

Location: Cumming Nature Center

In winter, the world is covered in white but there are many mysteries hidden all around us. Discover the secrets of winter! Explore the snow-dressed evergreens, learn how animal signs and tracks tell the stories of the forest, and celebrate the gift of snow with winter activities such as shelter-building, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and sledding. If your toes get chilly, get toasty by the fire!

The Woods in Winter - Ages 9-11

Monday, Feb 21 - Friday, Feb 25
Location: Cumming Nature Center

Winter is here! Leaves have dropped, birds have flown, critters have tucked themselves away. The forest is quiet and still, but there is so much life hidden all around us. Suit up and come to camp to learn all about nature in the winter and the science of snow. Celebrate the frosty forest with snowshoeing, skiing, sledding and hot cocoa by the fire!

Important Information

  • Registration is required prior to the start of camp.
  • Check-In and Check-Out take place at the Cumming Nature Center
  • The camp day runs from 9am to 4pm.
  • Campers must bring their own lunch and snack.
  • Extended care is available from 7:45-9am and from 4-5:30pm.
  • Day themes and activities are subject to change based on weather conditions.
  • Camp will take place mostly outdoors but indoor warm-up spaces will be available for use. Each day, there will be at least one indoor activity planned to give the kids a chance to warm up.
  • There will be a fire built each day at camp.

Tuesday, February 22: Tracks & Travels 

There are footprints in the snow, leading every which way! Who made them? Where do they lead? What stories do they tell? Become a junior tracker and learn about different animal tracks. Play tracking games and practice moving through the forest like the grey squirrel, the white tailed deer, and the raccoon and make tracks of your own as you explore the woods on snowshoes!

Wednesday, February 23: Amazing Adaptations & Hidden Homes 

How do animals survive the winter without coats, gloves, heaters and hot chocolate? Discover the amazing superpowers that animals have to get through the winter. Search for their secret burrows and build your own. Bundle up like the red fox, blend in like the snowy owl, and end the day with a cross-country skiing adventure!

Get ready for a day of winter play and celebration! Explore the wild trails, play winter games, and drink toasty hot cocoa by the fire. End the day with a delicious, warm snack and a sledding party!

Monday, February 21: Snow Science 

When it comes to snow, there is more than meets the eye! Learn about how snow is formed, investigate snowflakes under a microscope, perform experiments, play winter games, and help us kickstart a week of camp  with an afternoon of sledding!

Tuesday, February 22: Trees & Plants 

Trees are bare and plants are buried under the snow. The only green we can see are evergreen needles poking out from a blanket of white. Learn about the secret winter life of trees and plants as you hike the trails. Stop for games and a toasty fire along the way.  Learn  how to identify trees in winter through games of bingo, relay races and field studies. End the day with a woodland scavenger hunt!

Wednesday, February 23: Winter Adaptations

Winter is here. Many birds, animals and other critters have traveled South to avoid the cold, but some have stayed to brave the winter. Learn about their amazing survival strategies through hands-on discovery, games and experiments. Try snowshoeing and gather around the fire for a cup of hot cocoa!

Thursday, February 24: Winter Homes

It is hard to spot animals in the winter, but they are hiding all around us. Where do they go? How do they keep their homes warm? Search for secret burrows, holes, and dens as you explore the snowy trails. Learn about the animals that live inside and discover how snow can actually keep you warm! Learn igloo and quinzee building techniques and construct your very own snow village!

Friday, February 25: Tracks in the Snow

Most animals are hidden in winter, but their tracks are all around us! Become a winter detective as you search for and identify animal tracks in the snow. Play tracking games and go on an exciting scavenger hunt. Finish the day making your own tracks on cross-country skis!

Extended care options are available Monday through Friday. 

Before Care Session: 7:45 to 9am

After Care Session: 4 to 5:30pm
