Inquiry Room Investigation OR Virtual Experience

Explore how sound waves travel using your own senses and high-tech science tools such as the oscilloscope that turn sound waves into beautiful images. Create rockin’ vibrations on a Chladni plate while you learn about the geometry of sound waves, learn how sound can be used to treat diseases, evoke emotions, and even make things levitate. Explore concepts such as frequency, resonance, and harmonics as you create some good vibrations of your own!

For digital programs, our educators will work with your classroom to determine which platform works best to facilitate this experience.

In-person capacity may be limited in compliance with public health guidelines in effect on the day of your visit.

NYS Standards:

  • P-PS4-1 Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that sound is produced by vibrating materials.
  • 1-PS4-1 Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.
  • 1-PS4-4 Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance.
  • 4-PS4-1 Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move.
  • 4-PS4-3 Generate and compare multiple solutions that use patterns to transfer information.
