Live Science: Solids, Liquids & Gases

Grades 2-12 | Our coolest demonstrations, literally! This program explores temperature’s effect on solids, liquids and gasses using liquid nitrogen.

  • Museum & Science Center, Virtual
  • RMSC Delivers: Experiences at Your Site, Virtual Experiences, Demonstration (Live Science)
  • Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade

Live Science Show OR RMSC DELIVERS experience OR Virtual experience

This is our coolest outreach yet. Really, it is! Your class will thrill at the use of Liquid Nitrogen (-196° C), as they learn how temperature affects energy and changes matter from solid to liquid to gas. Watch your students’ amazement turn to understanding as they begin to explore and predict the outcome of experiments with objects exposed to extreme temperature.

In-person capacity may be limited in compliance with public health guidelines in effect on the day of your visit.

For digital programs, our educators will work with your classroom to determine which platform works best to facilitate this experience.

** RMSC Delivers Maximum Capacity Note **

The maximum capacity for Kindergarten is 30 students.

There is no maximum capacity for grades 1-12.

** Virtual Experience Maximum Capacity Note **

Virtual experience can accomodate maximum 30 students per group.

NYS Standards:

  • 2-PS1-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
  • 2-PS1-4. Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot.
  • 5-PS1-1. Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
  • 5-PS1-2. Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances the total amount of matter is conserved.
  • 5-PS1-3. Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.
  • MS-PS1-4. Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and phase (state) of a substance when thermal energy is added or removed.
  • MS-PS1-8. Plan and conduct an investigation to demonstrate that mixtures are combinations of substances.
