Beaver Ecology

Discover adaptations, natural and cultural history of beavers and their role in ecosystem services. Investigate past and present beaver sites to gain insight into communities, succession, food webs, and human influences. Students develop and model engineered dams that control stormwater and benefit wetlands

NYS Standards:

  • 3-LS4- Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.

  • 4-LS1-1 Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

  • 3-5-ETS1-3 Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

  • MS-LS2-5 Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and protecting ecosystem stability.
