Migrating & Winter Resident Birds in the Finger Lakes
Join us on Saturday, October 3rd and learn about the birds that migrate and the birds that stay in the area at this time of year.

ABOUT THE Event
Fall migration is in full swing! During this program, we will discuss key migrating birds in our region such as Wood Ducks, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Scarlet Tanagers and more. Learn about migration routes, timing, and behaviors of specific birds. We will discuss the key birds that remain in the area over the winter and what you can do to help them endure the winter months. This program is led by international birder Maria Ramos and is appropriate for adults as well as kids ages 8 and up.
This program will include a birding hike from 9:30am to 11am, followed by a presentation from 11am to 12pm.
about the presenter
Maria Ramos’ interest in wildlife started in childhood when she would go outdoors to observe birds, butterflies, and any creature that crossed her path. She was born and raised in the South American Country of Colombia, which is rated the most biodiverse country with the most bird species in the world. Observing the vast array of bird species, with their varied colors and behaviors, captured Maria’s interest from a young age.
Maria has been involved in bird rehabilitation, monitoring bluebird trails, duck conservation and many other birding endeavors for the past 30 years, including locally at Sodus Bay. Maria has also worked with and observed birds in Virginia, Maryland, and while circumnavigating the Caribbean Sea on a sailboat with her family.
Three years ago, Maria purchased a property outside Naples, NY that has many of the bird species inhabiting our area. Since then, she has been working to make the area more hospitable to feathered creatures by removing invasive plants and replacing them with native pollinator plants, creating a meadow around the pond where wood ducks raise their young, putting up and monitoring bird boxes, and establishing areas where birds and other wildlife can seek protection during the winter months. She is passionate about education and conservation of birds in the Finger Lakes, and named her property El Paraiso Bird Sanctuary.
