Geocaching @ the CNC
Did you know the Cumming Nature Center now has FIVE geocaches you can find? (GPS not necessary!)
what is geocaching?
Geocaching is finding treasures that are hidden in the woods using GPS coordinates, or hints! Typically, geocaches are small waterproof containers containing small treasures/trinkets and sometimes a logbook. Families and individuals will hike the trails to search, high, low, under, over, and inside logs, benches, rocks, stumps, roots, bushes, and more. Once you find a geocache, feel free to add your name/date into the logbook and also choose a treasure to take home!
(Please replace the treasure with another so that future geocache explorers can also take something home with them)

what do i need to bring?
- Water bottle, and dress appropriately for the weather
- The geocaching flyer (at the front desk or below on this webpage), your smartphone with the Geocaching app, OR your GPS!
- Cumming Nature Center trail map (at the front desk or here)
- A small ‘treasure’ to add to the geocache, if you will take one home with you! These can be tiny toys, stickers, cool rocks, etc.
how do i participate?
There are a few different ways you can join in the fun and go looking for geocaches. See below for some ideas, depending whether you wish to use a GPS, compass and map, the Geocaching app on your phone, or the CNC Geocaching Flyer!
using our geocaching flyer
Find the Cumming Nature Center’s geocaching flyer either below on this webpage or at the front desk in the visitor center. Then follow the descriptions of each geocache to find their locations!
There are hints at the bottom of the flyer if you need them.
Once each geocache is found: open it up, swap a ‘treasure’ if you want, record when you found it in the logbook, then close it up and put it back exactly where you found it for the next geocache explorer!
using the coordinates
Plug the coordinates listed on the geocaching flyer (at the front desk, or below) into your GPS, or the free GPS Tracks app, and follow the directions. Continue walking so that your coordinates are getting closer and closer to the geocache’s coordinates. Or use the compass on your smartphone to walk closer to the given longitude and latitude!
Once each geocache is found: open it up, swap a ‘treasure’ if you want, record when you found it in the logbook, then close it up and put it back exactly where you found it for the next geocache explorer!
using the geocaching app
First, use the free, public wifi at the nature center to download the Geocaching app and create a free account. Then, make sure the app has your location, and follow the instructions on the screen. As you walk, the app will tell you if you’re getting closer or farther from the geocaches!
Once each geocache is found: open it up, swap a ‘treasure’ if you want, record when you found it in the logbook and/or the app, then close it up and put it back exactly where you found it for the next geocache explorer!
important notes:
- All but one of our geocaches are hidden right alongside our trails, so please stay on the trails as you explore.
- One of our geocaches is accessible outside of our business hours, and without paying CNC admission!
- Currently, only two of our geocaches appear on the free version of the Geocaching app. All five will show up on the paid version.
