RMSC to honor bright minds at RMSC STEM Awards on November 13

ROCHESTER, NY—The Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) will recognize area educators and organizations making a difference and exciting the community about opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at the RMSC STEM Awards presented by G.W. Lisk. The dinner and awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018 from 6–8 p.m. in RMSC’s Patricia F. Hale Gallery, located on the second floor of the Science Museum. The event is open to the public.

“Based on our community’s role as a leader in STEM and STEM education, RMSC recognizes and celebrates the many organizations having a positive impact on our region’s vitality,” said Jeff Burkey, chair, RMSC STEM Awards committee. “We are excited to celebrate these well-deserving award recipients for the curiosity they have sparked and the inspiration they have provided in the important fields of STEM.”

Individuals and organizations were nominated for six distinct RMSC STEM Awards. Volunteer committee members selected finalists and winners.

STEM Catalyst Awards: These awards recognize area organizations or individuals that develop and encourage an environment that promotes innovation in science and technology, or that has utilized science and technology to form a lasting impact on the Greater Rochester Region. STEM Catalyst Awards are presented in three categories: Optics, Agriculture and Manufacturing. The 2018 finalists for these awards are:

  • STEM Catalyst Awards finalists in the Optics category, sponsored by New York Photonics: Luminate, Molecular Glasses, and Optimax
  • STEM Catalyst Award finalists in the Agriculture category: Cheribundi, Love Beets, and Red Jacket Orchards
  • STEM Catalyst Award finalists in the Manufacturing category: The Gleason Works, Klein Steel, and Vuzix

STEM Education Awards: Presented at elementary, secondary and university levels, these awards recognize innovative teaching in STEM education. Educators and/or administrators are recognized for innovation in inspiring students to understand, appreciate, and apply STEM concepts from kindergarten through higher education. The 2018 winners for these awards are:

  • STEM Education winner, K–6: Jason DeJohn, Judy Kinz, Parker Ormerods, Tim Scheg, Katie VanEps; STEM team of teachers, East Irondequoit School District
  • STEM Education winner, 7–12, sponsored by NextCorps: Mary Bunn, science teacher, All City High, Rochester City School District
  • STEM Education Winner, Higher Education: Women in Science (WISe), Rochester Institute of Technology, College of Science

Tickets to the RMSC STEM Awards presented by G.W. Lisk are $100 for individual tickets and $1,250 for a table sponsorship (10 seats), and include a buffet dinner and complimentary beer and wine.
