Maypole Family Event Celebrates European Tradition at Cumming Nature Center

ROCHESTER, NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Cumming Nature Center have the opportunity to enjoy a festive outdoor maypole celebration. At this special family program, attendees discover the traditional maypole dance and make a May basket to give to someone they love. The event takes place at the Cumming Nature Center from 10am–12pm on Saturday, April 30.

At the celebration, guests are encouraged to dance around the maypole while wearing their springtime finest, perhaps with a European vintage outdoor theme—flowing dresses and hair ribbons. The maypole celebration is a tradition originally from Germany, England and Sweden, though no one knows for sure how far back maypole dancing dates. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a bag lunch for a picnic after the festivities. Hiking is also available on the six miles of trails complete with wetlands and forest.

Cumming Nature Center is a dynamic environmental education facility that celebrates the unique landscape and culture of the Finger Lakes region through hands-on learning opportunities and thoughtful exhibits. Its 900-acre preserve includes six miles of trails complete with wetlands, climbing forest roads and hiking through the past. Attendees investigate the curious intricacies of nature with educational programs throughout the year.

Trails are open five days a week: Wednesday through Friday, 9am-3:30pm; Saturday and Sunday, 9am-4:30pm (closed Monday and Tuesday). The maypole celebration is $5 per person and $15 per family, including members. This includes the requested $3 per person/$10 per family requested donation.
