ROCHESTER, NY—Students explore their curiosity, develop physical and social skills and recognize their intrinsic relationship with nature at the new Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) Cumming Nature Center (CNC) Forest School. Summer Forest School, a weeklong, immersive day camp for children ages 5-12, runs from 9am to 4pm on Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22.
Summer Forest School’s mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment for children to nurture their relationships with nature through unstructured play, exploratory learning, hands-on projects and outdoor skills development. Nature serves as a classroom, guide and companion for daily activities that foster purposeful work, observation and exploration. Activities include sawing wood, constructing a shelter, creating natural art and building and cooking over a fire.
Outdoor adventures allow children to develop fine and gross motor skills, executive function, spatial awareness, balance and coordination. Children work together and use their imaginations. Students learn to be resilient, self-reliant and confident.
Because each day is spent entirely outdoors in all types of weather, preparedness is important. Comfort and proper clothing are required. A packing list is provided with camp materials.
Registration for RMSC members is $215 for one child, $205 for two children and $195 for three children. Registration for the general public is $230 for one child, $220 for two children and $210 for three children. To register, visit www.rmsc.org. Transportation to the CNC is not provided.
CNC is a dynamic, 900-acre environmental education facility that celebrates the unique landscape and culture of the Finger Lakes region through experiential learning opportunities and thoughtful exhibits. The preserve includes six miles of trails and countless opportunities to connect with the outdoors. CNC is located at 6472 Gulick Road, Naples, NY 14512.
