ROCHESTER, NY, March 22, 2022 – The RMSC is excited to announce the opening of three new lab spaces at the RMSC Museum & Science Center: the RMSC Council Physical Science Lab, the Killian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Life Science Lab, and the Dawn F. Lipson Technology Lab.
These spaces will be used for a variety of educational programming offered by the Museum & Science Center, including Curiosity Camps, school programs, and more.
“The completion of these new labs triples the Museum & Science Center’s capacity to serve and engage our community through meaningful, interactive teaching and learning opportunities,” said Allison Shultes, Director of Education at the Museum & Science Center. “The labs expand upon both the audiences we will be able to reach through a suite of programming formats, and the content, skills, and techniques we will be able to engage them in.”
In addition to the renovated space, the Museum & Science Center can now offer up-close and hands-on experiences with a variety of new, innovative technologies, including:
- Individual tablets and/or laptops for each program participant
- Laser and vinyl cutters
- New 3D printers
- Oculus VR headsets
- A STEM-infused makerspace
- And more
“To witness this project come to life is extremely rewarding. I am honored to work alongside our donors as they choose to support the RMSC and leave a lasting legacy,” said Ryan Shear, Director of Major Gifts & Capital Campaign at RMSC. “We are eager to see what new innovations, ideas, and projects learners of all ages can engage with in these new spaces.”
The new lab spaces were made possible through generous donations from the RMSC Council, the Killian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Foundation, and Dr. Dawn F. Lipson, community advocate and philanthropist.
“We have had a long history of pledging funds to help the RMSC achieve the next level of excellence. This laboratory, as well as the other two, are no exception to that mission,” Kathy Giuffrida and Laurie Adams, Co-Presidents of the RMSC Council, said. “By sponsoring its construction, we have enabled the Museum to bring a modern 21st century space for the education of our community and our children.”
Dr. Lipson shared, “I’m not a big technology person, so why would someone like me fund this? Because technology is a big part of everyone’s future and it will change the world.”
