The Rochester Museum & Science Center’s (RMSC) Cumming Nature Center is delighted to host Birds in Art—a touring exhibit featuring 60 works by international artists from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s 42nd annual Birds in Art exhibition—beginning Saturday, June 16–Sunday, August 12, 2018.
Three simple words—birds in art—took on multidimensional significance as an exhibition title in the mid-1970s. Birds in Art is internationally recognized as setting the standard for avian-themed art. Each year, the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin invites contemporary artists working in an array of mediums, including oil, watercolor, the graphic arts, bronze, stone, and others, to submit artworks interpreting birds—or even the suggestion of a bird—for jury consideration. The Birds in Art phenomenon is a tribute to the more than 1,000 artists whose works have comprised the annual exhibition since 1976. Following the new iteration of the exhibition each fall at the Woodson Art Museum, curators select 60 works for touring exhibition presented at museums across the United States
“The Cumming Nature Center encourages the public to explore the intersection between art, science, and nature, and hosting the Birds in Art exhibit is a milestone in the Nature Center’s exciting upward trajectory,” said to Nathan Hayes, director, Cumming Nature Center. “We are delighted to bring this exceptional exhibition to the Finger Lakes region.”
The Birds In Art exhibit captures the spirit of craft and design and their relationship with the natural world. Companion experiences at the Nature Center—including Wooden Bird Carving and Birds in Culinary Art—will offer visitors additional opportunities to hone a handcraft and deepen their connection to exhibit elements that highlight birds from exotic locations and the farmyard, while Bird Identification Seminars will offer indoor and outdoor training for bird enthusiasts of all ages.
“There are so many ways into this exhibit that you are bound to find something that resonates,” Hayes said. “The breadth of the work practically guarantees the opportunity for all individuals, K to gray, a chance to marvel at the work of a master artist dedicated to capturing some of the best our planet has to offer.”
The Cumming Nature Center is a dynamic, 900-acre environmental education facility that celebrates the unique landscape and culture of the Finger Lakes region through experiential learning opportunities and thoughtful exhibits. Educational programming at the Nature Center explores the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. These programs are designed to inspire innovative thinking among participants and provide them with the tools, knowledge and confidence to take action in the face of local, regional and global challenges. The preserve includes six miles of trails and countless opportunities to connect with the outdoors.
