ROCHESTER, NY—Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Avangrid Foundation, in partnership with Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) in support of the Museum’s Curiosity Camps. The grant will subsidize the cost of one week of camp participation for 50 children who reside within the City of Rochester. The partnership enables the children to attend Curiosity Camps between Monday, June 24 and Friday, August 23, 2019, free of cost. With nearly half of all Rochester City School District students not graduating from high school—a problem often worsened by summer learning loss—RMSC’s Curiosity Camps play a critical role in helping children get and stay excited about learning.
Every summer, nearly 2,500 children arrive at RMSC for Curiosity Camp programs—a phenomenal opportunity for children ages 2–15 to discover the excitement of science. Curiosity Campers have the opportunity to pursue passions in animation, archaeology, dinosaurs, electricity, forestry, gaming, robotics, space, virtual reality, water, wildlife—almost 90 topics in all—in hands-on, minds-on programs that pique their curiosity and get them excited about science.
“We are thrilled to be investing in such a timely and important opportunity for young people,” said Nicole Licata Grant, director of Avangrid Foundation. “It is exciting to be part of making a difference and contributing to the future of tomorrow’s young leaders and the workforce.”
RMSC has offered camp programming for children ages 2–15 for more than 15 years. Now named Curiosity Camps, the program is critical to RMSC’s mission to stimulate broad community interest in and understanding of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Curiosity campers enjoy unique educational experiences and interactions with scientists and other professionals under the guidance of experienced educators to further their inquiry into STEM topics.
Openings are still available for select RMSC summer Curiosity Camps. To learn more or to register, visit RMSC.org/camps or call 585.697.1942.
