Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) will present Editing Our Evolution: Rewriting the Human Genome, a moderated discussion followed by in-depth, small-group conversations from 6–8pm on Friday, July 20, 2018.
As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality. What should we do with this power? Who should decide? Participants in this community discussion with researchers, physicians, and neighbors will have the opportunity to discuss the future of human genome editing as well as its risks, rewards, and benefits; consider scientific, social and ethical possibilities such as the connections and distinctions between therapies and enhancements, issues of equity and access, and the potential impacts of making changes to the human genome; and explore and understand the diverse perspectives that help scientists make better decisions in their research.
Editing Our Evolution: Rewriting the Human Genome includes:
- a short moderated discussion between researchers about the basics of gene editing;
- a breakout session featuring small-group discussions around three different scenarios;
- an opportunity to reconnect with the larger group to share thoughts from each group’s discussions; and
- additional opportunities to hear from other participants over light refreshments.

RMSC will present SustainABLE and Building with Biology Days between 11am–3pm on Wednesday July 18–Friday, July 20.
