ROCHESTER, NY—From fiery explosions and chemical reactions to the wonders of electricity and invisibility, experience non-stop action during Science Alive at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) all summer. Summertime brings a special edition of Science Alive with a new activity happening every 15 minutes. Activities take place Monday, June 26–Friday, September 1 and encourage the exploration of what makes science spring to life.
A program for the whole family, visitors participate in experiments, meet live animals, encounter a giant sphere of visually stunning earth and space systems, and see things go “splat.” The schedule includes:
Animal Shows with Wildlife Rockstars
Wednesdays at 12:30pm and 2:30pm
Experience live animals up close. The Wildlife Rockstars are a wildlife education outreach group that is part of Bridges for Brain Injury, Inc. As part of their rehabilitation, members share details about live native and exotic animals, birds and reptiles.
Live Science Shows
Daily at 1pm and 3 pm
RMSC Players bring fiery explosions, extreme temperatures, amazing antics and entertaining education to their performances live on stage in the Bausch Auditorium. Discover the Live Science Shows on pressure, energy, hydrogen, light, color, temperature, physics and meet Wormie and Mother Nature.
Science Encounters
Daily 10:15 am*, 11:15am, 11:30am, 12:15pm, 12:30pm, 1:15pm, 1:30pm, 2:15pm, 2:30pm, 3:15pm and 3:30pm
(*On Sunday, the 10:15am encounter is during members-only hours)
Science encounters, with RMSC staff and volunteers, take place in exhibit galleries. Come see chemical reactions and engineering marvels with more than 20 different demonstrations including Mastodon Toothpaste, Invisibility, DaVinci Dreams, Forces, Inside Incandescence, Smog & Frog, and Nano Rainbow.
Electricity Theater
Daily at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm
Featuring two six-foot Tesla coils, this musical electricity show amazes visitors as arcs of lightning light up the theater. Audiences sing along to favorite tunes as pressure waves radiating from the coils are manipulated to create a tune – in other words, we change the musical tone of the “thunder” that the lightning produces.
Science On a Sphere
Facilitated Presentations: Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1:30pm
A stunning 3-D projection system displays real-time earth systems and planetary science data onto our ‘floating’ five-foot sphere. The sphere comes to life as animated weather patterns, atmospheric storms, climate change and seismic activity move across the globe.
New Forces of Nature Exhibit
Now Open
Guests also have the opportunity to experience a new exhibit, Forces of Nature. Taking highlights from the now closed Elements of the Extreme exhibition, Forces of Nature explores our wild world through hands-on engagement. Dive into the augmented reality sandbox, glide in an actual hovercraft, romp in the volcano ball pit and more – all while exploring foundational concepts in science. Located on the Museum’s mezzanine level.
Science Alive and Forces of Nature are free with regular museum admission: $14 adults, $13 seniors and college students with ID, $12 ages 3 to 18, free for children under 3 and RMSC members.
