ROCHESTER, NY—Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) get to experience what it takes to photograph an extremely delicate and short-lived subject—a snowflake. The Snowflakes Up Close exhibit, featuring the stunning photography of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) professor Michael Peres and original photomicrographs made by pioneer snowflake photographer Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, will be on display on the third floor of the RMSC from Friday, February 3 through Sunday, April 30.
In the exhibit, visitors explore the scientific art of snowflake photography and delight in the beauty of more than thirty snowflake images. For a fully immersive experience with these ice crystals, guests walk through Michael’s photographic process and examine a snowflake under a microscope while pondering the big question – are any two snowflakes alike?
Michael Peres joined the faculty of RIT in 1986 and currently serves as professor and associate administrative chair of Photographic Arts & Sciences. Peres also served as chair of the Lennart Nilsson Award nominating committee located in Stockholm Sweden, and a coordinator of the RIT Images from Science project as well as the RIT Big Shot project. Peres’s photography career began in 1973 and he has earned several awards throughout the years for his work. In 2016, he published Michael Photographs a Snowflake—a book written specifically to bring the beauty and science of snowflakes to young learners. The book will be available in the RMSC Gift Shop for the duration of the exhibit.
Michael will also give a presentation as part of the RMSC Richard C. Shultz Science on the Edge lecture program at 7:30pm on Thursday, April 27 in the Museum’s Bausch Auditorium. The Snowflakes Up Close exhibit is free with regular museum admission: $14 adults, $13 seniors and college students with ID, $12 ages 3 to 18, free for children under 3 and RMSC members. For group reservations and rates, call 585.697.1942.
