Spring Break Curiosity Camps at the Science Museum

Spring Break Curiosity Camps at the Science Museum

Spend the week as a stranded castaway on an island adventure during Spring Break Camps at the Science Museum!

Island Explorers

Monday, March 29 - April 2

Ages 6–11

Spend the week as a stranded castaway on an island adventure!  Discover wacky island animals with Charles Darwin as we embark on the HMS Mastodon.  Build a stormproof shelter, test bamboo tools, and engineer an escape (if you even want to leave).  Plant a tropical terrarium, and use the elements of your extreme environment to inspire art.  Explore famous island architecture, and see if you can design a way (or maybe two) to pass the time.  We might be stranded, but we've got science on our side!

Campers will be grouped by age with activities tailored to fit their age level. All Camp Programs include instructor led hands-on activities and exploration time in the museum’s galleriesRegister for the day or join us for the whole week.

Monday, March 29: Island Basics

Bad news!  Your ship’s gone down, and you are officially stranded!  Take this crash course in Island Basics, and brush up on basic survival skills science.  See what it takes to make it as you work together with your island neighbors, and investigate firsthand wacky island weather (you might want to grab a poncho).  Learn about how islands form and the geology of our own local islands in the Adirondacks.  Consider continents—Australia?  Antarctica?  What’s up with them?  Get ready for a week of island adventures!

Tuesday, March 30: Island Life

Embark on board the RMSC’s HMS Mastodon, named after Charles Darwin’s own HMS Beagle!  We’ll spend the day with the Galapagos Islands as our classroom as we learn the ins and outs of island plants and animals.  Explore habitats, homes, and island diets.  Learn the value of exploration, investigate the scientific method, and discover how extreme environments lead to extreme organisms—from iguanas and Komodo dragons to piglets and wallabies.

Wednesday, March 31: Island Engineering

We’ll be here for the long haul, and it’s time to get to work.  Explore the design thinking process as you manufacture tools, engineer boat materials and make use of scraps, and build a shelter to weather Hawaii’s constant chance of summer storms.  This day is all about Island Engineering, and you’re in for an upgrade.  Introduce simple machines to make island life easier, design a Rube Goldberg machine to raise your palm leaf blinds in the morning, then kick back in the ultimate beach chair.

Thursday, April 1: Island Art and Architecture

Enjoy the finer things in life as you travel around the world, exploring famous island architecture and art inspired by islet environments.  Make prints from the sun, weave raffia wall hangings, and melt sand candles with seashells from the seashore.  Scale cliff sides to scour lava pebble peaches in Santorini, and design the ultimate getaway in Bora Bora—an island surrounded by more little islands, a private lagoon, and a coral reef.  Then go out on a limb and engineer cabin cantilevers in Norway on Manshausen Island.  Tiny islands call for tiny (but massively creative) solutions, right?

Friday, April 2: Island Entertainment

Camp is set up.  You’ve stockpiled food and investigated island species.  So what’s next?  On an island, that’s up to you!  Design and create your own entertainment as you try not to put googly eyes on everything.  Head outside, and play beach games in the RMSC’s gardens.  Build toys from nature, fly kites with Bernoulli, and make instruments from whatever you can scope out on the beach.  How many ways do you think you can use palm leaves, bamboo, and pebbles?  Get ready to find out!  Can’t think of anything else to do?  Change gears, and end the week by engineering an escape!
