Important Camp Information

  • Prior to registering, please review our Camp Information & Policies for all of the additional information you’ll need to know before your campers first day!
  • To register call 585.697.1942 or explore Camps by Age below to register online. Registration is required prior to the start of camp.
  • Campers are grouped based on the age of the child at the time of the camp.
  • You may not register other people's children. If your camper plans to attend the same camp with a friend please indicate that upon registration so we can group them accordingly.
  • Early registration is recommended!  We do NOT have a waiting list and enrollment is limited.
  • Almost & Full Day Campers must bring their own lunch.
  • Extended Care is available.

Camper Drop-Off & Pick-Up Information

  • For camps on the museum campus, drop-off and pick-up takes place in the Eisenhart Auditorium lobby, not the main museum building.
  • Full Day Campers can be dropped off anytime between 8:30am - 9:15am. Campers arriving before 8:30am will need to register for Extended Care.
  • Full Day Campers can be picked-up anytime between 3:45pm &-4:30pm. Campers who are not picked up by 4:30pm will be placed in Extended Care and you will be charged accordingly.
  • Early pick ups between 3:30pm - 3:45pm may not always be possible.
  • Drop-off and pick-up times for Almost and Mini Campers have not changed.

Different camp structures are available based on the age of your campers:

Mini Camps

Mini Camps are a great opportunity for our youngest campers to prepare for preschool & for hands-on learning through play in a social setting.

AM SESSION: 9-11:30am or PM SESSION: 1-3:30pm

Almost Camps

For “almost” a full day, Almost Campers enjoy fun and enriching learning activities and museum exploration as they prepare for a full-day program. Lunch is NOT provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch. For some Curiosity Camps that take place at the Cumming Nature Center, transportation is provided and are indicated by the bus icon .

Full Day Camps

Full Day campers spend the whole day exploring the fun & creative ways that science (and a wide variety of other STEM topics) helps us explore the wonders of our world! Lunch is NOT provided by the RMSC. Campers must bring their own lunch. For some Curiosity Camps that take place at the Cumming Nature Center, transportation is provided and are indicated by the bus icon 

Dino Discovery — Week 1

Week 1 (June 29-July 3)

Discover dinosaurs like never before!  What did they eat? Where did they live?  How big were they really? Can you walk in their giant footsteps?  Did they run, jump, or even fly? Dig for fossils, play dino dress-up, hatch your own dinosaur eggs, and meet some modern-day animals that resemble dinosaurs.

Space Race — Week 2

Week 2 (July 6-10)

Let’s race into space and become the first campers to play amongst the stars.  Zoom to the moon, explore the solar system, and journey into the cosmos to see what an amazing place space really is.  Launch rockets, hunt for aliens, and visit the exhibits at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Snug as a Bug— Week 3

Week 3 (July 13–17)

Did you know there are more insect species on the planet than any other species!? It’s enough to drive you buggy.  Investigate the itty bitty world of bugs. Learn about flying flies, bumbling bumblebees, creepy crawly ants, and even itsy bitsy spiders.  Go on a bug hunt, make some teeny tiny friends, and design your own bug to take home and spook your family.

Down on the Farm— Week 4

Week 4 (July 20–24)

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O; and on that farm there was a cow, a horse, a goat, a rooster, a gaggle of chickens, and a flock of sheep.  Learn about all the animals that call the farm home. What do they eat? How do we care for them? What’s their role on the farm? And don’t stop there!  Discover how crops are grown and harvested; learn about tractors and other farm equipment; and find out what life is really like down on the farm.

Splish, Splash— Week 5

Week 5 (July 27–31)

Water, water everywhere...  Our whole world is water: It's what we drink, where we play, and where many of our animal friends live.  Explore water in all its forms; learn about the sea and its inhabitants, and discover how important (and fun!) water is for you.

Growl & Howl — Week 6

Week 6 (Aug. 3-7)

Can you growl like a tiger? Howl like a wolf? Roar like a lion?  Some of the scariest animals are actually the friendliest. Whether they swim, fly or run, discover some of the fiercest animals on the planet.  Use some of your storytime favorites to learn about the real thing; help goldilocks confront the three bears, withstand a huff and a puff from the Big Bad Wolf, and discover the underwater world of mommy and daddy shark (doo doo, doo doo da doo).

Over the Rainbow — Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 10–14)

Can you name the colors of the rainbow? Spin the color wheel and experiment with shadows and light.  Mix new colors and use them to create artistic masterpieces. Head outside to discover all the colors in nature and meet our friend Roy G. Biv.  Explore the science behind rainbows themselves and follow the rainbow to find a pot of gold!

All Aboard! — Week 8

Week 8 (Aug. 17–21)

The train is in the station and it’s waiting just for you!  Grab your tickets and hop on board to learn all about trains, boats, buses, cars, planes and more!  Find out where they go, what they do, and how they help us explore the world around us. Jump into the fascinating world of physics and discover what makes these machines go.   So fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a week of adventure on the RMSC Express. Choo, Choo!

Silly Science — Week 1

Week 1 (June 29–July 3)

Not only is science fun, but some of it is downright silly.  How does a mastodon brush his teeth? What is oobleck? What makes bubbles so fun? From silly to serious, it’s a whole camp of science demos and experiments.  Discover physics, experiment with magnets and get a hands-on introduction to all things scientific.

Animal Stampede— Week 2

Week 2 (July 6-10)

Are you ready to join our thundering herd?  How about our gaggle of geese, our army of frogs, or our pack of hyper hyenas?  Flocks, pods, prides and swarms... the animal kingdom is packed full of groups of wacky, wild, and wonderful creatures.  Join their ranks and learn all about our animal friends. Discover where they live, what they eat, and how they communicate.  ...It’ll be more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

Monster Machines — Week 3

Week 3 (July 13-17)

The 18 wheels on the truck go round and round…  From trucks to tractors to construction equipment, the world around us has been shaped by monstrous machines.  Find out how heavy equipment is used to construct our cities; how tractors and farm machines help produce our food; and the role that trucks play in our everyday lives.  Use fun-sized versions of the real thing and build your own simple machines.

Dinosaur Roar — Week 4

Week 4 (July 20-24)

Let me hear you dinos roar!  You'll be amazed by all the things that make these mega-sized creatures so bad to the bone.  Become an explorasaurus as you explore the Expedition Earth Gallery and dig for fossils. Make your own fossils and dinosaur eggs to bring home.  If you love dinosaurs, then this camp is for you!

Lil’ Astronauts — Week 5

Week 5 (July 27–31)

Calling all future astronauts and adventurers!  Blast off into space and explore our universe. Tour the solar system, land on the moon, journey to the stars, and experiment with gravity.  Complete astronaut training camp, build your own space costumes, and visit the exhibits at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Icky, Sticky Science — Week 6

Week 6 (Aug. 3-7)

Forget about hands-on science, it's time for hands-IN science!  Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty for a week of icky-sticky, ooey-gooey, slimey-grimey science fun.  Discover the super-slimey states of matter, use household items to make outrageous paintings, and find out how messy (and FUN!) chemistry can be.

Sprout & About — Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 10-14)

Dig up some fun and plant the seed for a week of adventure as we explore the natural world all around us.   From roots to shoots, flowers to vegetables and all sorts of growing things, see how they grow from itty bitty sprout into big beautiful plants.  Stroll through RMSC’s gardens and check out our roof-top rain garden (with your feet planted safely on the ground below!). Plant your own seeds, get an up close look at some creatures that live in the ground, and discover all the science happening in our own backyards!

Sense It! — Week 8

Week 8 (Aug. 17-21)

See it!  Smell it!  Hear it! Taste it! Feel it!  Put your senses to the test as you learn all about our five senses and why they’re so important to us.   Sense It! will be packed full of science experiments to test your senses, optical illusions, sounds waves, touch boxes, and sensory play galore.  Don't miss our most sense-ational camp yet!

Blast Off!— Week 1

Week 1 (June 29-July 3)

10, 9, 8, 7, 6…  Countdown to fun in a week dedicated to space exploration and the science behind flight and rockets.    Once you’ve constructed a rocket, set off on a journey to the moon. Continue your voyage of discovery as you explore our solar system from the sun (don’t get too close!) all the way out into deep space where you’ll investigate giant planets, stars, constellations, galaxies, and more.  ...5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST-OFF!

Under Construction — Week 2

Week 2 (July 6-10)

Grab your hard hats and head on down to the jobsite for a week of constructive and destructive fun.  Discover how buildings, bridges, and cities are designed, built, and demolished. Use fun-sized versions of the real things to learn about trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment.  Reach into your tool belt to see how tools are used, construct some simple machines, and visit the Under Construction exhibit.

Ice Age Adventures— Week 3

Week 3 (July 13-17)

Travel back in time to the Ice Age when glaciers covered the land and water was frozen.  In a world where snow blanketed everything, large animals like mammoths and mastodons roamed the land.  Check out RMSC’s mastodon, make fossils, explore ice crystals, learn about how people lived in this frozen world, and make your own ancient cave paintings.

Messy Mixtures — Week 4

Week 4 (July 20-24)

Messy mixtures and righteous reactions are the name of the game!  Roll up your sleeves to make slime, play with foam, mix colors, and make messy art in a week full of crazy chemistry.  You're gonna get messy, so we'll make smocks and get busy stirring up some fun.

Mini Med School — Week 5

Week 5 (July 27-31)

Enroll today in RMSC Medical School; the only major med school to accept 4 year olds!  Once we look the part, we'll get down to the business of learning all about the human body.  How strong are bones? Why do we blink? What makes us sick and how do we stay healthy? Discover the answers to these questions and more as we explore the human body inside and out.

Weather Kids — Week 6

Week 6 (Aug. 3-7)

The forecast is in and it calls for a week of fun!  Have you ever wondered where our weather comes from?  From bright and beautiful to wet and wild, weather shapes our lives every day.  Can you create a cloud in a bottle? Can you make it rain inside? Can you make it snow in the middle of the summer?  I bet you can! So whether the weather outside is rainy, stormy, windy or cloudy, it’s going to be a bright, bright sunshiny week of camp!

Seas the day!— Week 7

Week 7 (Aug. 10-14)

Ever wish you could swim with the fishes or sail the seven seas with the great explorers?   Seize the day and have a whale of a good time exploring our amazing oceans.  From itty bitty fish to giant sea monsters, discover the world of animals hiding just below the surface.  Find out how boats float and what makes them sail across the waves. Transform yourself into a baby shark; see the ocean in motion at Science on a Sphere; and find out if it really is better down where it's wetter.

Story Book Science — Week 8

Week 8 (Aug. 17-21)

Discover the science hiding between their pages of your favorite storybooks.  Is the sky really falling or is it gravity? Was anyone ever as tall or as hungry as Paul Bunyan?  Can you plant a giant beanstalk? Let’s read together and find out what Goldilocks can teach us about trial and error, prevent pollution with the Lorax, and explore frozen worlds with Elsa and Olaf.

Abracadabra, hocus pocus... it's magic with a scientific focus!  Grab your cape and ready your wand to learn how real science looks like magic.  Step into the world or fantasy to make dragon blood, unicorn poop, and fairy dust.  Perform super science-y spells from your box of tricks and take in a science magic show with the RMSC Players.  You won't believe your eyes!

Habitat?  What’s that?  From the tops of mountains to the bottom of the sea; from arid deserts to lush rainforests; from the frozen arctic to the sun-scorched savanna; explore the many unique habitats found on planet Earth.  Find out what makes each one so special, what animals live there, and what characteristics make their habitat so perfect for them.

Go digging for dinosaurs and travel back to a time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.    From gentle giants to carnivorous monsters, get to know T-Rex, Triceratops, Velociraptors, and several other famous—and not so famous—prehistoric beasts.  How do we know they were here and where did they go? What did their prehistoric habitat look like? How has the Earth changed in the 66 million years since then?  Go digging for fossils in Exhibition Earth, discover how fossils are made, and become a master paleontologist.

Unlock the mysteries of science and history hiding in the galleries right here at the Rochester Museum & Science Center.  Let the Exhibition Earth Gallery be your guide to the natural history of our region; become an engineer with a little help from the How Things Work and Keva exhibits; discover light and optics in Illumination; and travel back in time as you visit Native Peoples of North America, Rochester’s Underground Railroad, and the Rochester 1838 diorama.  Experience a Live Science Show with the RMSC Players; have the world at your fingertips in Science on a Sphere; and take in a show at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Week 1 (June 29–July 3)

Blast off to adventure as you explore the wonders of outer space, both real and imagined.  Journey to the moon, tour the solar system, and venture into deep space. Dive into the world of science fiction to see how some of our favorite films and novels have shaped our world and our understanding of the universe.

Whatever the Weather – Week 1

Week 1 (June 29–July 3)

Whether the weather is cold or whether the weather is hot, whether the weather is fair or whether the weather is not...   Investigate the world of weather, from the bright and beautiful to the wild and crazy.  Rain, snow, sleet, hail—learn all about weather that falls from the sky. Examine the science behind the destructive power of hurricanes, blizzards, thunderstorms, and more.  Experience singing lightning in Electricity Theater and use real weather data to watch storm systems form in Science on a Sphere. Whatever the weather, we’ll weather the weather; whether we like it or not.

Make It & Break It – Week 1

Week 1 (June 29–July 3)

Ever looked at something and thought “how does that work?”  Can’t get enough of our How Things Work Exhibit? Want to become a maker and create your own gadgets and gizmos?  Gear up for fun as you experiment with machines; see how they work and invent one of your own. Take apart household electronics to see what’s inside and how their circuits work...  You’ll be shocked to discover what a good time you can have learning about electricity! Discover electricity and mechanics in the most exciting way possible as you complete and Inventor Center challenge and experience the singing lightning in Electricity Theater.

Week 2 (July 6-10)

Discover robotics in a new way as we put a new spin on one of our flagship programs.  Get a hands on introduction to everything that the field of robotics has in store for you.  Experiment with a variety of different robotics systems, including Lego Mindstorms EV3. Working as a team, you will build an EV3 robot and learn to control this sophisticated robot.  Use an infrared remote control to conquer a series of engineering challenges, modifying the robot design to complete the challenges with maximum efficiency.

Week 2 (July 6-10)

You won’t believe your eyes!  Is it magic or is it science? Welcome to the world of wizardry at the RMSC's school of magic.  Create optical illusions, make things disappear, and find out if the hand really is quicker than the eye.  Grab your wands and broomsticks to discover the science and magic from your favorite books and movies.  Try your hand at spells, potion making, herbology, caring for fantastic beasts and more!  Experience a special science-magic show from the RMSC Players.

Animal Encyclopedia — Week 2

Week 2 (July 6-10)

It’s everything animals from aardvark to zebra!  The animal kingdom consists of over 2 million known species (so far!)  and are some of the weirdest and wildest inhabitants of our world. Ever wonder what all of those animals are up to?  See how they measure up—from tiny, fuzzy and slimy to critters that crawl and fly. Meet the animals that call RMSC home, go on a field trip to the Seneca Park Zoo, and by the end of the week you’ll have an encyclopedic knowledge of animals from head to tail.

Candy Chemistry — Week 3

 

Week 3 (July 13-17)

A spoonful of C12H22O11 helps the science go down?!?  There’s a real art—and lots of science—to making candy!  Get ready to mix and experiment as we use our favorite sugary treats to discover the world of chemistry.  See how sugar crystalizes into candy, investigate the artificial coloring that makes candy so appealing, learn how chocolate melts, make your own candy, and so much more.  Complex chemistry has never tasted so sweet!

Week 3 (July 13-17)

It’ll be an old-fashioned “who done it?” this week at RMSC. Explore the science of forensics and crime solving as you learn to crack codes, collect clues, interview witnesses, dust for fingerprints, and extract DNA. But when a priceless artifact goes missing from the museum, can you put your training to work, rise to the occasion, and solve the shocking crime?

Engineering Our World — Week 4

Week 4 (July 20-24)

Discover the many sides of engineering and find out how this exciting field of science shapes our world.  Become a civil engineer and a structural engineers to construct bridges and buildings as part of a model city.  Have a hair-raising good time discovering electrical engineering and the science of electricity. Try your hand at chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and computer engineering.  Complete an RMSC Inventor Center Challenge as you investigate the field of mechanical engineering and you’ll be well on your way to engineering your world.

Week 4 (July 20-24)

It’s a festival of messes!  Roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, and be ready for some hands-in science fun.  Test the properties of oobleck, make science splatter art, smash watermelons, and celebrate the science of making a mess.  One of our signature programs, MESStival promises to be a week of ooey-gooey, slimey-grimey, icky-sticky fun!

Week 4 (July 20-24)

…Give me the news; I’ve got a bad case of loving camp.  Examine what makes the human body tick in this hands-on discovery camp.  Hearts, lungs, bones, and brains—explore the organs and body systems that keep us going.  Become a radiologist, dentist, optometrist, and orthopedic surgeon all in one week! You know what rocks?  Rocks rock. Get cooking and stir up some fun in our first ever science cook-off.  Roll up your sleeves as we explore the science of your favorite dishes and dig in to discover what different nutrients do for your body.  Step in the laboratory to explore the basics of molecular gastronomy; conduct experiments to collect delicious data; and use lab-quality ingredients such as liquid nitrogen to make your own frozen delicacies.  Discover the wacky origins of some everyday foods and learn about the chemical reactions that make our food taste so good (or bad)! Put your culinary skills to the test in the Great Science Cook-Off as you use the power of science to whip up a dish that will impress our judges. 

Please note: Due to the wide use of food products throughout the activities of this camp it is not recommended for campers with severe food allergies.

Animation at the Strasenburgh Planetarium — Week 5

Week 5: July 27-31

Make your own movie and show it on the giant screen that is the planetarium dome.  Spend the week inside the Strasenburgh Planetarium to learn the art of animation and produce a stop-motion animated movie.  Create characters, sketch a storyboard, set the scene, and work as a team to produce a short animated film. Invite your family to your film premiere inside the planetarium itself!  

Camper drop-off and pick-up will still be in the Eisenhart Auditorium.  Camp activities will take place in the Strasenburgh Planetarium. Parents & family will be invited to a film premiere on Friday afternoon.

VEX Robotics — Week 6

Week 6 (Aug. 3-7)

Build complex robots, learn about gear ratios and overcome team challenges as you step up to VEX Robotics!  Experiment with the design process as you build, test, and re-test your team’s robot to complete tasks and compete in head-to-head competitions.

Wilderness Survivor @ Cumming Nature Center — Week 6 

Week 6 (Aug. 3-7)

Discover what it takes to survive in the wilderness. Build debri huts, get clean water, make tools, and learn several ways to build fire, including friction. The art of natural navigation, stalking skills, wild edible ID, and basic bushcraft activities of offered as you get to know your survival buddies deep in the forests at Cumming Nature Center. Gain valuable experience in preparedness and how the survivor mind works. An optional overnight* on Thursday will provide the opportunity to challenge your newly acquired skills!

*Optional overnight is available for an additional $45.

Archaeology of the Frost Town Pioneers @ Cumming Nature Center— Week 7 

Week 7 (Aug. 10-14)

Head outdoors and explore working in the exciting field of archaeology.  Uncover the history of the early pioneers in the settlement known as Frost Town on the grounds of Cumming Nature Center. Plan the excavation, open test units, and find real artifacts from the 200 year-old settlement. Try your hand at pioneer skills, crafts, and living through hands-on activities as well!

Note: This camp takes place at Cumming Nature Center.  Check-in will be at RMSC, with a bus departing for CNC each day at 8:00am and returning to RMSC at approximately 4:45pm.

Renegade Robotics — Week 8

Week 8 (Aug. 17-21)

Go rogue and discover the exciting, cutting edge field of robotics on your own terms.  This camp program combines both group activities and self-paced exploration time with several different robotics systems.  Challenge yourself to build an intricate EV3 robot. Download plans from the internet or create your own to build a robotic elephant, puppy, monster, crane, or other advanced robot.  But building is only half the challenge! Program your robot to complete complex tasks. Exhibit your completed robots and show off your newly acquired robotic skills to the public in one of our museum galleries.

Extended Care Options

Extended care is available Monday- Friday for Almost Camps (BEFORE Care Only) and Full Day Camps, but is NOT available for Mini Camps. Registration for Extended Care is required.

BEFORE Care

7:45-9am $20/week

Supervised, unstructured playtime monitored by camp staff.

AFTER Care

4:15-5:30pm $25*/week

Structured, exploration time in smaller group settings--choose the elective that’s right for your camper!

Choose between:

  • Movie Buffs: Enjoy your favorite feature films up on our big screen. All movies shown are age appropriate and rated either G or PG.
  • KEVA Club: Take your tower-building skills to the next level as you construct wooden towers and structures with the ever popular KEVA Planks.
  • Board Gamers: Challenge your friends to a classic board game—chess, Battleship, Clue, Candy Land, Monopoly, Sorry!, Life, Connect Four and more!

BEFORE & AFTER Care Combo:

Need extra time before and after the camp day? Save $5 when you sign up for both Before Care and After Care.

7:45-9am AND 4:15-5:30pm $40*/week

 

*A late fee of $10/camper will be charged for campers that have not been picked up by 5:30pm. A late fee of $40/camper will be charged for campers that have not been picked up by 5:45pm.
