Reopening with Your Safety in Mind

Adventures at the RMSC might look a little different, but the exciting experience of discovery and exploration will be the same. As we reopen the Science Museum, Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cumming Nature Center, we ask you to work together with us to keep the RMSC a safe space for yourself, for all visitors, and for our staff.

See below to learn about the changes to the visitor experience.

What we’re doing to keep you safe

  • Limiting capacity within the Star Theater to 26 seats.
  • Using only the East Ave facing main entrance doors.
  • Opening Planetarium doors only 30 minutes before each show.
  • Encouraging visitors to purchase advanced tickets online. Onsite ticket purchases will also be accepted.
  • Implementing social distancing with signage, spacing markers, and route paths.
  • Providing physical barriers such as plexiglass shields in customer service areas.
  • Providing substantial access to hand sanitizer and encouraging hand washing often.
  • Increasing cleaning and disinfecting throughout our facility after every show.
  • For more information, see RMSC’s Cleaning and Sanitation Standards below.

What we’re asking our visitors to do

  • Stay home if you are not feeling well.
  • Purchase tickets in advance before you head to the Planetarium.
  • Arrive no more than 30 minutes ahead of the show - doors will be locked before that point.
  • Wear a mask. This is required for any visitor over the age of 2. If you cannot wear a mask for health reasons, you are required to wear a face shield. If you do not have a mask you can purchase one from the Planetarium Box Office for $1.
  • Wash your hands often, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and be sure to cough/sneeze into your elbow.
  • Please be patient – don’t crowd around waiting areas.
  • Practice social distancing and remain 6 feet away from others not in your party. Keep children within reach at all times.
  • Follow the directional signage throughout the Planetarium.

RMSC Cleaning and Sanitation Standards

We have worked diligently to develop new procedures that ensure a safe environment for all who come through our doors. This includes making our rigorous sanitation procedures public, mandatory COVID-19 safety training for all staff members and volunteers, limiting building capacity, and modifications to day-to-day operations and exhibits.

We will continue to rely on guidance from CDC, New York State Department of Health, and Monroe County Health Department to make operational decisions and adjustments as necessary.

Cleaning & Sanitation Standards

  • RMSC custodial staff is on-site before, during, and after Museum, Nature Center, and Planetarium operating hours to sanitize and clean the restrooms, cafe, common areas, and exhibit galleries
  • Staff are frequently cleaning and disinfecting commonly touched surfaces using electrostatic sprayers to eliminate the spread of germs throughout each day
  • The Star Theater chairs, railings, and other high touch areas will be disinfected after every show.
  • Multiple hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the Museum, Planetarium, and Nature Center
  • Staff and volunteers are required to frequently wash their hands and to not come to work if they are sick or have a fever.
  • Visitors are encouraged to notify Museum staff if an area or object needs immediate attention.
