February Break Curiosity Camps

February Break Curiosity Camps

We’re ready for a blizzard at the RMSC. Build your repertoire of winter weather activities with us as we explore the STEM side of hobbies and pastimes.

Snow Day Science

Monday, February 15 – Friday, February 19

Ages 6–11

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! We’re ready for a blizzard at the RMSC. Build your repertoire of winter weather activities with us as we explore the STEM side of hobbies and pastimes. Travel back in time to carve, whittle, and weave. Turn up the heat, and take over the kitchen—and maybe make a science-inspired snack (or two). Design, make, and play your own board game; and paint with pipettes as we view art through an all-new lens. Then build a classroom-sized fortress to bunker down in until spring!

Important Information

  • Registration is required prior to the start of camp.
  • Check-In and Check-Out take place in the Museum lobby.
  • Program runs from 9am to 4pm

Cost: $265.00

Monday, February 15: Kitchen Chemistry

Roll up your sleeves, wash your hands, and grab an apron—and maybe a pair of goggles too! It’s time for some kitchen chemistry as we churn butter for freshly fermented sourdough bread, trick our taste buds through molecular gastronomy, and design an ice cream sundae bar fit for a mad scientist. But we won’t stop there! We’ll transform food scraps into compost, natural dyes, and future homegrown produce and spend some time with the RMSC Players during an explosive Live Science show.

Cost: $60.00

Tuesday, February 16: Woodworking and Basket Weaving

Leave your modern-day devices behind as we investigate two of humanity’s most time-tested hobbies. Carve and whittle; weave and wend—letting the museum’s collections and exhibits inspire and guide. Push popsicle sticks to the limit and explore the wonders of geometry as you piece together wooden puzzles. Then construct your own loom to continue the crafting beyond camp! Round out the day with a show at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Cost:  $60.00

Wednesday, February 17: Game On

Gear up for a day of dice rolling, card playing, and gameboard roaming in this summer sneak peek! We’ll explore games of all forms—past, present, and future; competitive and cooperative; digital and analog. Design avatars and game pieces, construct giant Jenga blocks, make your move with Sphero robots, and witness technology in action at Science on a Sphere. Complete our quest, and you just might Level Up!

Cost:  $60.00

Thursday, February 18: Science Studio

Repurpose test tubes, beakers, and pipettes as we transform our science laboratory into a studio for artists with an inclination to investigate. Paint by programming, sculpt with physics, and take a microscope to pointillism as we explore color theory. Don’t just build your portfolio; blow it up with art inspired by chemical reactions and the spirit of experimentation. Complete the day with a musical performance by our twin Tesla coils in Electricity Theater.

Cost:  $60.00

Friday, February 19: Fort Building

Preview one of this summer’s brand-new camps as we end the week with an all-time stuck inside classic: Fort Building! We’ll start small, beginning the day with engineering challenges designed to test our creative problem-solving. Balance sugar cube cantilevers, engineer an escape for Rapunzel, and weave a nest to weather a windstorm. Then we’ll think (and build) big, transforming entire rooms into cardboard cities—complete with LED street lights and furniture land formations.

Cost:  $60.00

*Please note that the week’s schedule, shows, and activities are subject to change based on registration numbers, health and safety recommendations, and campers’ individual needs and interests.
